Story: Grayson (Jasper Springs #4)
CHAPTER 40
Henry
I waited patiently with my coffee, watching the door. When Grayson appeared, panic spread instantly. But I shoved it down for the moment, focusing on the tall, hot as hell man in front of me, dressed in a nice suit.
I preferred the dressed down version of Grayson, but he looked like a damn wet dream in a suit.
My cock voiced our opinion rather loudly and I crossed my legs.
“You rang,” Grayson said as he sat down, folding his hands in his lap.
“Do you want to get a coffee first?” I asked, nodding to the counter. There was no line.
“Are you offering to buy me a coffee, Henry?” he teased.
“I am,” I said nonchalantly.
“Well, in that case, I shall keep it simple,” he said as he rose from his seat, and I followed him to the counter.
“I’ll have a flat white, please,” he drawled, his tone smooth like the cream that would no doubt grace the top of his latte.
“I tried something new today,” I said, breaking the ice as they handed him his coffee.
“Really?” Grayson asked, sipping his drink.
“I thought about something you said.” I shrugged, leading us back to the table.
Grayson sat gracefully, crossing his legs and I sat beside him. He cast me a wary glance, but he did not move.
“What did I say?”
“Do you remember when we first came here? I came to give you your wallet back—”
“Ah, yes. How could I forget the beginning of our... friendship,” he said cautiously, but I could see the spark in his eyes. The longing.
Maybe we could be more.
I want to be more.
“You teased me, about my simple order. Then you bought me a cinnamon roll.”
“Yes, well, dessert is the best part of a meal.”
“Change is hard for me, Gray.”
I didn’t miss the way his entire body relaxed, the way his shoulders fell, his eyes watered at the mention of his nickname.
The next words out of my mouth were the hardest, but I knew if I didn’t say them, I’d regret it.
“But I know change is a lot easier with you.”
Grayson let out a breath, taking another sip of his coffee.
“I don’t like cinnamon rolls, though,” I said, clearing my throat.
Grayson smiled wickedly. “Then we will simply find you a suitable replacement.”
I focused my gaze on him, fully aware we weren’t talking about dessert anymore. Which should have scared me but... it didn’t.
Because I trusted Grayson.
I trusted him with my whole heart.
“Well, I mean... there is one dessert, I really like,” I said, feeling a blush creep on my cheeks.
“What is that?” Grayson said, his fingers stroking the sides of his cup in slow motion. He shifted his legs, fidgeting in his seat as he cleared his throat.
At the risk of sounding like an absolute idiot, the words fell out of my mouth. “A good cup of coffee,” I said as I raised my cup.
Grayson raised his in repose. “You deserve the best coffee there is, Henry.”
“I already have the best coffee there is.”
