“How is she drawing so much power?”Adalyn asked her wolf.
“I have no idea, but you need to tread carefully,”her wolf warned, not trusting her mother or the situation.
For the first time in her life, the look in her mother’s eyes alarmed her. She’d seen that expression many times, though it had always been directed at enemies.
“I don’t know what kind of vendetta this is, but I won’t allow it to go on. You’ve torn apart countless families. For what? What did any of them do to you? To this coven? What did Bjorn do to you to deserve this fate? This life as a prisoner? Bjorn deserves to be with his mate. With his family,” Adalyn said as she awaited her mother’s wrath.
“Let me guess, you think the wolves will accept you as part of their family with open arms? The half breed bastard daughter with a claim to the throne?”
“This may come as a shock to you, but they have accepted me as one of their own. And here’s a newsflash, there is no throne. But you knew that already. So, why did you even send me to Black Paw? To challenge Rafe for Alpha? Then what? Where does it end?”
“Honestly, I thought they would’ve killed you and been done with the whole situation. I mean, think about it for a minute. An unknown heir shows up at their doorstep. Someone who has a true claim to be the Alpha, and that person just happens to be a witch. The one thing they hate above all else. Had they killed you, like they were supposed to, that would’ve given me all the reason I needed to launch a full-scale attack and wipe that pack of mongrels off the face of the Earth once and for all.”
Her mother’s voice was colder than she could’ve ever possibly imagined. It was as if icy crystals coated each single word. There wasn’t a single hint of warmth, love, or motherly familiarity. Anything would have been better than the answer her mother had given her. To know she’d been sent away to be slaughtered by her enemies caused something deep inside of her to snap.
Before Adalyn could stop herself, emerald sparks flew from her fingertips, knocking the guards who had accompanied her mother unconscious. Fury coursed through her veins. Flames erupted from their unconscious bodies.
“My guards! You know not what you have done!” her mother shouted.
