Chapter twenty

W e decide on Chinese takeout, mainly because they deliver and none of us feel like leaving the house.

Passing my tablet around the room, I tell the guys to each add in what they want to the base order that Piper and I usually make. We can cook, but we don’t particularly care to, so we know all the best spots to get takeout.

Piper tosses the remote to Maverick and he starts scrolling through the streaming services. I notice that he spends a lot of time in the ‘you might like this’ sections, scoping out our tastes.

“You guys like Hannibal?”

For some reason, Mav sounds shocked at that conclusion. Piper and I look at each other and say, “It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!”

Everyone bursts out laughing, but Maverick is still gaping at us. “My mates like horror movies. This is awesome!”

Piper holds up her hand as if to stop him. “Hang on, before you get too excited, you need to know Sage has limits. I’m pretty open minded, but she can’t handle anything paranormal. No Annabelle for her.”

I roll my eyes at her, but she’s not wrong. I’m happy she will have someone to watch those kinds of movies with her now. Usually, we have to wait until we are back in Wyoming for a girls’ night because as much as she loves them, she will not watch them by herself.

“What about something like IT ?” Milo asks from his spot on the end of the couch. Of all our mates, he wasn’t the one I picked for being a horror fan.

As soon as Piper hides her face in Liam’s shoulder and starts laughing, I know she’s going to spill all my embarrassing stories.

“Just don’t…” Her words are cut off by more giggles and her amusement has the guys grinning at her. “Don’t pull up next to a bus…”

“A bus?” Milo’s confused question sends Piper into loud whoops of laughter.

I bury my face in my hands. I can feel the heat rushing to my face and I know I’m as red as a fucking tomato. Yet I’m thrilled that she’s opening up to our mates, even if it is at my expense.

My raven cackles in my mind. She’s never understood my irrational fear of clowns.

“We once ended up next to an entire busload of clowns at a stoplight. Sage freaked out, and I thought she was going to jump out of the car and run home.” Piper is laughing so hard tears are streaming down her face.

A warm hard glides up and down my back in soothing strokes. “It’s okay Sage. I don’t like clowns either.” Wyatt whispers in my ear, but I can tell everyone heard him. The idea of a six-foot six demon being scared of clowns is hilarious in its own right and soon my giggles join Piper’s.

After that, the ice is not just broken but shattered. It wasn’t that we hadn’t gotten along up until that point, but something about our killer clown conversation let us truly see each other.

Just because he tried to make me feel better, I choose Wyatt as my movie couch for the first movie. Piper sits with Milo and Walker, Liam, and Maverick lay on either side of us and one between. Each of them touching at least one of us.

With every movie, the guys rotate until they have each had a chance to hold at least one of us. I fall asleep pressed between my mates, and my last thought as my eyes drift shut is that I’m finally with my whole family.
