Story: Deception (Mafia Daddies #3)
I weave in and out of the traffic, my blood pumping with adrenaline coursing through my veins. Why the fuck couldn’t she just listen to me?
My gut tells me something will go down, and the fact those I care most about in the world are on the line has my mind locked on my target. To get to them as soon as possible.
A searing pain hits my shoulder, and my hand jerks the handlebars of my bike, causing me to swerve. I quickly regain control as warmth gushes down my spine, making me realize I’ve been shot.
Motherfucker.
I dip down as low as possible on the bike and flit between larger vehicles in the hope for cover.
The sound of revved engines has me using the surrounding buildings’ windows as mirrors, and I can make out two SUVs with blacked-out windows gaining on me. When one flashes blue and red lights, I know without a shadow of doubt they’re the ones after me, and vehicles begin moving out of the way, leaving me open and exposed.
There’s a reason I’m being chased and shot at by undercover police, and it has nothing to do with any crimes and everything to do with Gerrard fucking Davis using every resource he has. I know right then and there the son of a bitch is making a play for Hallie and Matt, but he’s ensuring I’m out of the way first. I rev my bike, more determined than ever to reach them.
He will try to take them from me, but I’ll do everything in my power to stop him.
Another bullet slices through the air, hitting the truck in front of me as I duck low.
The car on my left gains speed, and the prick in the passenger seat lowers his window farther, aiming his gun in my direction as the SUV swerves closer toward me.
I quickly draw my gun from behind my back and aim back at him. Bullets fire from mine and his, but we both hold steadfast. Neither of us hit our target, and I grit my teeth in annoyance.
My breath stills as they inch closer, and the lights from the other vehicle reflecting in the windows around me tell me I’m running out of luck. The prick moves his gun and aims toward my tire, and just as he releases a shot and I brace for impact, an SUV comes out of nowhere. Rafael’s behind the steering wheel, and determination flashes on his face as he plows his SUV head-on into the vehicle. The sound of the crash ricochets through the city as I turn my handlebars and speed up, pushing away the fact that my brother could be injured by saving me.
The second car has no choice but to skid as I take the first corner I see. The sooner I get rid of these fuckers, the better, and I’m on a motorbike, so I use that to my advantage. Twisting the throttle to full capacity, I whizz down the center of the city street, ignoring the blaring of horns as I lose the fuckers who dared to try to take me down.
At the back of my mind, I begin to dissect Gerrard’s plan.
Will he have people on his street waiting for me? Probably not. He wouldn’t want to pull the police into his private life, especially because he hit Matt.
Are the police who tried to take me down part of a police crackdown? Again, probably not. They went about it all the wrong way, with too many witnesses. They clearly used the lights to their advantage, and everything else was something Gerrard set up. I doubt if they’re actually part of the FBI, probably his or his father’s goons.
I slow down as I enter residential streets. The last thing I want is to draw any more attention to myself, or worse, hurt an innocent bystander.
When Gerrard’s house comes into view and I see Hallie’s car still parked there, my heart sinks. She should have left by now.
I know whatever I’m about to walk into is bad, and it sends my stomach plummeting.
