“I don’t think I am.” I wrap my finger around the trigger.
Morgana shoves open the front door and steps inside, taking a look at the body on the floor. “As soon as I agreed to help you with one last task, I knew I was going to regret it.”
“But it’s impossible to give up on our friendship.” I smile, keeping the gun trained on Logan while she grabs him by the bicep and hauls him to his feet. “Sorry about the smell. It turns out he’s more of a little bitch than I thought he was.”
She starts laughing. “He pissed himself? Because of you? I find that hard to believe. You’re not that intimidating.”
“I’ll have you know that I am, in fact, intimidating enough to make a grown man—however pathetic he is—piss himself. But, if you can take him to that location we talked about, I would be happy.”
Morgana drags Logan toward the front door. “Cleaning crew is outside. Told them I had a job to do and was going to need them. They’re around back. If you go through the side door, you should miss them, and nobody will ever have to know that you were here.”
“You’re the best.”
“This was the last time.” Morgana smiles and shakes her head, but there’s sadness in her eyes. "You’re on your own now, kid.”
Just like I always have been.
Aiden clears awaysome of the steam on the shower as I step into the bathroom. “Where were you all night?”
The sun is just starting to rise, streaming through the massive window and illuminating the bathroom.
I take off my clothing—the ones I changed into before I burned the bloodstained outfit—and step into the shower with him.
Hot water cascades down around me as he turns on the second showerhead. He gives me a curious look while reaching behind me for my shampoo.
Smiling, I trail my hands up his chest. “I was prepping your birthday present.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I do. Your birthday is supposed to be special, so I got you a present that’s going to make it the best birthday ever.”
He lathers the shampoo in his hands before motioning for me to turn around.
I do so, and he massages the soap into my roots, easing the building headache.
“I would rather spend the day in bed with you than going out.”
“Trust me.” I tilt my head back to look at him, smiling against his lips when he leans down to kiss me. “You’re going to want this present.”
Not like I can return it.
I smirk and let Aiden rinse the shampoo from my hair, loving the simplicity of just standing in the shower with him, letting the water run over me.
Keeping the surprise from him is going to be hard. I hate lying to him, but it’s going to be worth it in the end.
Even if it might not seem like it now.
Chapter Twenty-Four
AIDEN
I could kill her.I really could. Well, maybe not kill-kill her, but I don’t think I would hesitate to drag the knife across Zoe’s pretty little neck right about now as I thrust into her as punishment.
Jade appears in the doorway to my office with a big smile and a stack of pancakes with a candle stuck in the middle. “Happy birthday, big brother.”
“Did you know she was going to do this?” I gesture at the balloons littering the floor, the streamers draped from the ceiling, and the giant penis-shaped piñata hanging from the ceiling.
“If I did know, would I be in trouble for not telling you?” Jade sets the pancakes down on my desk and drops into one of the chairs.
