Page 29 of Cruel Possession
Hardly any sound comes out, but I know he heard me. His smirk says it all.
“Now that we got that cleared, that’s enough of your games. Tell me what you were doing under the bed.”
I stop in the opposite corner of the room, my head still spinning.
That bastard! It was all a lie.
Thank God.
Right?
But does that change anything?
Yes.
No.
Married to him or not, and I’m so glad it’s not, I have to get out of here, keep my head on my shoulders.
My life depends on it.
So, I take a deep breath. “I was having a nap. It’s hard to sleep in here with the bright lights on.”
“You never seem to have a problem any other time.”
I shrug. “I answered one of your questions, now you’re going to answer one of mine.”
“That’s not how this works.”
“Well, apart from the torture of seeing you every day, you haven’t done much, so I assumed being held hostage was open to interpretation.” I lean back against the wall, trying to lure him closer.
And it works, he steps deeper into the room. His lips press together in a thin line, gaze still darting like he doesn’t quite trust me. It’s smart, but I’m quicker than he is.
I’m willing to acknowledge that I’m not the one in control right now, and that’s why he’s stepping right where I want him.
Aiden’s hands drop to his side, his chest open. “Where is the next attack going to be?”
“How should I know? I’ve been locked in here for days. Besides, I’d be dead the second I told you anything.”
He shrugs. “One way or another, won’t we all die eventually?”
“Well, since I’m in no hurry to meet my end, you’ll understand if I just refuse to answer, won’t you?” I smirk, gaze dragging up and down his body. “You’re looking good.”
“And you’re looking like you’re trying to bury my family in the ground.” He stalks closer to me, looming over me.
I shift to the side, starting a game of cat and mouse with him, pacing around the room as he follows, stepping just out of reach each time he goes to touch my wrist.
Aiden stops, still between me and the door, but there’s enough of a gap that I might be able to get by and get out of here if I move quick enough.
It’s the best chance I’m going to get.
I dive forward, slicing the piece of metal across his neck.
I have no idea why I do it, but I pull back so the cut is not deep enough to kill him, but it’s still going to hurt like a bitch.
He hisses and reaches for me, but I’m already slipping under his arm and sprinting for the door. Leaving it open was his first mistake.
I run out of the room, glancing at the guards at the far end of the hall before turning in the opposite direction and lunging for the staircase.
