-:- NYX -:-

Wow, my first actual day at the new job and I am more than a little excited about it. The ladies at the interview were awesome. I loved talking with them, and I’m positive we will all get on well.

Stepping into the kitchen of the house, I shout, “I’M HERE!” Not sure that is the way to introduce myself when arriving, but I don’t want one of them walking into the kitchen being taken by surprise and having a heart attack.

I can just imagine someone asking how my first day went and my having to say, “Well, I gave one of them a heart attack and she croaked!” I roll my eyes at my own thought.

“Hello, Nyx. We have had breakfast and as you can see we’re a little messy.” Sandy shrugs as she steps toward the kitchen table and parks her butt.

“No problem. I’ll get all this cleaned away in no time.” I give Sandy a smile and get set to picking up all the dishes, rinsing them before placing in the dishwasher.

“Do you think you could make some BLTs for lunch? We love them but have to cut them into smaller slices.”

“I can make them. Why do you need them cut smaller?” I have a feeling I should not have asked.

“Well, Carol bit into hers and her teeth dug deeply into it but wouldn’t come out, so she took the BLT out of her mouth and her teeth were attached to it. ”

Now, I must look like an owl as my eyes nearly pop out of my head.

The image of Carol, the pretty lady, being all gummed up as she looks at her teeth attached to her sandwich.

A giggle escapes, and I look at Sandy who has what I can only describe as a shit-eating grin on her face.

We look at each other for a moment or two before we both burst out laughing.

Tina walks into the kitchen using her cane for support. “What are you two laughing like hyenas about?”

Sandy wipes her eyes while smiling. “Carol and her teeth.”

Tina laughs. “That was a sight I can tell you. But it’ll not happen again. I found her some of that stuff you stick on your teeth and then they stick to your gums like shit to a blanket.”

“Oh…” It’s all I get out before I start to laugh again, visualizing poop stuck on a blanket, which we all know is impossible to just scrape off. These women are hilarious, and it seems they don’t have a filter of any kind.

Joan walks into the kitchen along with Carol, which has me, Sandy and Tina laughing. I have tears running down my cheeks and I am trying to control myself, but the thought of this happening is like some comedy show stuff.

“Oh, Christ on a cracker you’re talking about the BLT again aren’t you?” Carol sighs, taking a seat at the table next to Sandy. “You gotta shut up about it. It was bad enough happening without you bringing it up every few minutes.”

Joan, leaning on the counter giggles lightly. “It was the funniest thing, Carol. Honestly, the look on your gummy face was just the damndest thing I’ve ever seen. Well, apart from the time Sydney got his balls stuck in his zipper. Now that was hilarious too. ”

It takes quite a while for the four of them to settle down. I keep cleaning the surrounding kitchen areas. They are chatting about all types of things, from children’s shenanigans, to husbands not knowing a thing about women even though married for years.

I sneak out of the kitchen and set to cleaning bathrooms, bedrooms, and the living room. It takes nearly all day as they have so much stuff that I have to move a lot of things to clean and then put it all back again.

By four in the afternoon, I’m feeling a sense of achievement, but I have to say I’m tired and ready to go home. I find the ladies in the living room watching some chat show on the TV.

“It’s time for me to go. Everything is cleaned, and tomorrow I’ll do laundry and check the fridge and freezer.

If you need anything from the grocery store make a list, and I’ll fetch that too.

” I give them a wave as I make a quick getaway.

I’m not sure they even noticed my escape as they are throwing out what they want from the grocery store.

Walking home, I have a sense of achievement and I hope that this job is going to work out because today has been great. My phone buzzes in my jacket pocket, and taking it out I see it’s a text from Alf.

Alf: How did today go?

Nyx: Great. I love them. They are hilarious.

Alf: Oh, they sure are. I bet they told you about the teeth?

Nyx: They did, much to Carol’s disgust.

Alf: Any problems, let me know.

Nyx: Will do, thx .

Popping my phone back into my pocket, I can’t help the small smile on my face. For the first time in a while, I feel like my life could go in the right direction.

I’m in sight of my apartment when the sound of a motorcycle catches my attention. I turn and see two bikers drawing alongside me and slowing. I’m not sure if I should hurry home or see if they need something.

Pulling up, one of the bikers takes his helmet off, and I recognize him from Club Whisky. He’s the one who stands at the door. “Oh, hi. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah. I saw you walking and remembered you from the club. Did you have any trouble with those two bitches?”

“No. I’ve not seen either of them. Not wanting to either.” The second biker has given me a small chin lift, but seems to study the area. I can’t help but look around myself to see what he’s looking at. For some reason, that seems to amuse both of them.

“You fancy coming for a night out with me?” The first biker asks.

Frowning at him, I can’t help but blurt, “You asking me out on a date?”

“Yeah. Name is Colton, by the way.” Now he gives me a cheeky smile, and before I can stop myself, I return it.

“Okay, Colton. My name’s Nyx. What night?” I ask.

“Sunday. There won’t be so many assholes out. They’ll all be home recovering from Saturday and that will just leave us nice folk out, enjoying ourselves.” Colton turns and looks at the man with him who is chuckling to himself .

“I live just here.” I point at my apartment and turn back to Colton. “Come for me at seven.”

“I’ll see you then, Nyx.” Colton places his helmet back on and pulls out with his friend by his side as they ride away.

A date! I can’t help but smile to myself because I’ve not been on a date in a heck of a long time. I hope I’m not putting myself in danger or something dark. I’ve watched Sons of Anarchy, and shit, they nearly all end up dead!

Two days later, I’m walking into town where I’m meeting with Blake for a coffee.

The ladies are on an outing today with a club they joined.

They travel to military cemeteries and support veteran events.

Today they are going to a burial for a soldier who was left somewhere for years, and with no family they can find they are having a ceremony and burial.

It’s really heartbreaking to think this veteran, and others, have no-one who can mourn their passing.

Walking into the Coffee House I see Blake right away, and she has another woman with her. I step up to the table and place my jacket on the back of the seat I’ll take.

“Nyx, this is Star. She’s a friend and…” Blake is interrupted by Star.

“I’m Star, married to Meat. My biker man is the bestest, and don’t listen to anything Blake tells you. He’s damn awesome.” Star is grinning so broadly.

I take it she’s joking around with Blake. Blake rolls her eyes before standing. “Shut up, Star. I’ll get drinks. Sit down, Nyx. ”

Taking a seat, and as Blake and I take turns in who buys the coffee, I’m okay today as it’s her turn. I look at Star who gives me a blistering smile. “So, you are a friend of Blake?” I ask.

“I am, and I’m a friend of yours now. I love making friends. Blake said you got a new job, is that right?” Star asks.

“Well, it’s nice to have a new friend, Star.

” I give her a small smile because I’m not sure if this woman is right in the head.

“Yes, I started a new job, and love it. I’m looking after four elderly ladies.

All widowed to prior military men. Rather than have to sell their homes and go into a care home, they decided they’d all sell and buy this large four-bedroom place.

That way they look after each other, and none of them will have to be looked after away from the place.

I think it’s great. They can get caregivers to come to the house if it’s ever needed. ”

I can see Star is now taking this seriously as her happy face , as I’ll think of it, has a small frown now.

She nods more to herself than to me. “I like that idea. It’s something that others should do.

Most of the elderly are capable of looking after themselves.

It’s the house chores that they struggle with.

If you ever need help with the ladies I’ll come over.

Free of charge, I’d like to help if I can. ”

“Well, that is mighty generous of you. I think they’d enjoy the company of someone popping in just to say hello.” I look at Blake as she places my latte in front of me. “Thanks, Blake.”

We discuss my job, the ladies, and they both laugh until tears pour down their faces when I give them the BLT knowledge.

“I’ll have to go soon. Mav is going to take my trike in for a check over. Not sure why, because he’s always tinkering with it,” Blake snort-laughs.

“It’s a man thing, I’m sure,” I state blandly .

Star grins. “I do my own services on my bike, but my Charger goes to the brothers. I blooming love my vehicles. You need to get a bike or a vehicle of some kind, Nyx.” Star looks at me seriously.

I giggle a little, which surprises me, as I’m not one for giggling. “Well, all I can afford to buy at the moment is a bicycle, and not a motorized anything at this point.”

Star nods her head. “Yeah, I’ve been in that position, but not anymore. Oh…why don’t you come over to the clubhouse on Sunday? It’s cleaver throwing practice day.”

Cleaver throwing! What the ever loving…!

A man grabs Star around her waist and literally lifts her out of her seat. Kisses her silly then turns to look at Blake and me. “Sunday, come, it’s free.” With that, he carries Star out of the Coffee House like she’s the most precious thing in the world.

“Wait for me!” Blake states as she quickly grabs her purse and jacket, before rushing outside and throwing, “See you Sunday, Nyx. I’ll send you the details,” over her shoulder before the door closes behind her.

Later that same evening I’m relaxing in my small living room, TV on low although I’m not really watching it. It’s background noise that just helps me feel I’m not so alone.

My phone rings and picking it up from the chair arm beside me I see it’s my father. I quickly take the call. “Hi, Dad.”

“Nyx, how you doing, girl?” That’s unusual. He would not normally address me that way .

“I’m okay. I have a new job. How are you?” I never ask about the wifey. I can’t stand her; she’s a disgusting woman. I’m sure she only latched onto Dad so she could have a free ride the rest of her life.

“Good, good. It’s one of the reasons I’m calling…” he pauses, and pauses quite a while. I wait because I have the feeling something bad is coming. “We’ve decided to stay in Europe. Not return to America.”

“Oh, I see. What about the house?” Now, I’m talking about the house my mother purchased before she married my father.

“Well, I’m going to sell it so I can use the money to buy something here.”

“What about my right to the house? My mother’s house. You know the one she had before she met you. You leaving me nothing of my mother now, Dad? You allowing wifey to take everything my mother worked hard for?” Oh, I was getting nasty, and for once I didn’t give a shit if I upset him or not.

“Nyx, your mother has been dead a long time. I want to start life here, ready for the next chapter…”

I interrupt what I know is going to be a speech, one to get me onside.

“Don’t bother spilling all that. What is happening is your wifey wants you to sell my mother's house so she can live a life of luxury on someone else’s hard work.

Bet she hasn’t gotten herself a job? Or doing anything in the house, you know got herself a maid? ”

“Nyx, don’t. I don’t want to fall out with you over this. I have made sure your inheritance from your mother is with the lawyer and safe for when you reach twenty-five.” Sighing with that exasperated tone he has when he knows what he’s doing is wrong.

“Okay, let’s not fall out. Let’s call it done shall we?

You’ve had hardly anything to do with me since you remarried.

All your time is with her . You brought me up, yes, but with minimal time and effort.

Now you are taking what my mother left, and you know she wanted that house to be with you until you didn’t need it anymore.

Then it was to come to me. But hey, it doesn’t matter to you does it?

Because she’s dead…” I’m over this shit, and now he knows it, with the words I’m saying and the tone I’m saying it in.

“Nyx, no, no, listen…”

“I’m not listening to anymore of your bullshit.

I’m done. Don’t contact me anymore. We both know that won’t be a hardship to you, as you only speak to me twice a year, anyway.

Go live your life with the bloodsucker, and maybe I’ll forgive you for all you’ve not done in this life, in my next.

” I don’t give him the chance to speak again, although he kept trying.

I turn my phone off as I know he’ll try to sponge around me until I give in.

But this time it’s not happening. I really am done with him and his freaking wife.
