Worse still, my bond is not happy that I’ve upset her.

“Nox… let him go,” Gryphon suddenly says, and my gaze drops down to where my hand is still clutching at Gabe’s arm to keep him upright.

Moving with the utmost care and a snail’s pace, I let my hand slip away. The girl moves instantly, practically stomping over to Gabe and shoving herself against his chest to get in between us. When I stand completely still and keep my eyes away from her Bond, she finally relaxes a little, and I feel the control of her bond ease away.

“Incoming, the plane’s here.”

There’s a whoop of joy, and then Gryph’s team startles into action, moving around us to prepare for our pick up. I stay exactly where I am, moving from watching the plane’s descent to watching the girl. She’s guarding Gabe, not just from me but from the entire world right now, and the fierceness in her actions leaves no room for confusion.

I don’t understand it at all.

“How the fuck do we tell North about this? I don’t even know what to call it,” Gryphon mutters, his eyes flicking over his shoulder to the girl like he can’t keep them off of her, but for once it doesn’t piss me off.
