Nyx

I ’m twenty feet from the cabin where Lumi and Ambrose are. I can barely stand. My legs are shaking so badly, but I have to keep moving forward.

The vampires are either dead or gone.

Lumi is safe.

Riven is on his way to save Ambrose.

All that’s left to do is go into the house.

But I can’t make my legs move.

I used a lot of power, too much.

To send a message to Riven.

I used my vampire lord powers like an alpha command to try to help Lumi—sending one vampire running and one frozen long enough that she could attack.

But the worst offense of all—I used my mind control to make her shift.

I’m nauseous.

Shaky.

Weak.

The headache.

Breaking the blood deal is taking its toll on me. But it’s more than that. I fall to my knees as the world starts spinning.

I hear Lumi in my mind begging Ambrose to hold on, to stay alive. She doesn’t realize the condition I’m in; she’s so focused on him .

Her words, which I assume are meant for him but my heart hopes are for me, are the last thing I hear as the world starts to go dark.

“I love you—don’t die.”
