She gave me a smile before she continued to eat.

“Then why don’t you ask me questions?”

“I know everything about you.”

“I disagree.”

She took a break and set down her fork. “Alright. Are you married?”

“If I were, I wouldn’t be with you now.”

“Most kings have mistresses. It’s a common practice with the humans.”

“Humans marry to procreate. Vampires don’t have that option, so if we marry, we marry for love. I would never tell a woman I loved her if I weren’t prepared to pledge my commitment for eternity.”

She slid her glass of wine close. “That’s romantic.”

“Like I said, you don’t know everything about me.”

“So, are you searching for that one special woman?”

“No,” I said. “But if we cross paths, there’s no way I’m letting her go.”

She drank from her glass. “So that woman waiting for you means nothing to you?”

“They all mean nothing.”

“Plural?”

The smile came on to my lips. “Yes, plural.”

“So you have the appetite for screwing all these different women, but you think it’s realistic to be monogamous?”

“If I loved her, it would be more than realistic. It would be easy.”

She gave an incredulous expression before she took another drink.

“You don’t believe me.”

“Maybe in a single lifetime, I would believe you. But not for eternity.”

“What about you? Have you been in love?”

Her answer was as quick as a whip. “No.” She grabbed her fork and knife and returned to her meal. “Are you going to eat?”

I continued to watch her. “Sounds like a sore subject…”

“What do you mean?”

“You deflected that topic pretty hard.”

She looked me in the eye as she placed the bite in her mouth and chewed. She let the silence trickle by.

“I’m sorry.”

“Your sympathy is unnecessary. I told you I’ve never been in love.”

“But there’s a story there.”
