After I locked her in the cell, I returned to Viper in Kingsnake’s study. “I got one. What about the other three?”

Viper stood there with his other commanders. “The one we captured killed himself. The other was killed in combat.”

“And the third?”

“Got away.”

“So mine is the only prisoner.”

“You took him alive?”

“I tookheralive.”

“We’ll need her to talk.”

“And tell us what?” I asked. “They obviously came here to kill Kingsnake and Larisa.”

“But we can learn what they’re planning.”

I released a quiet chuckle. “This one isn’t going to talk.”

Viper gave me a cold stare. “Leave it to me.” He immediately departed the room, as if he intended to do it right this minute.

He’d been the general of Grayson for over a thousand years, and he probably wouldn’t hesitate to use all elements of torture to get what he wanted. The woman probably thought she was prepared for that, but no one was truly prepared for agonizing pain.

I found myself leaving the study and joining him in the hallway. “Let me handle this.”

He stopped abruptly and faced me, one eyebrow cocked. “This is my job, Cobra.”

“You aren’t the only one who knows how to interrogate someone.”

“But this is what I do—”

“If I need help, I’ll let you know.”

His eyebrow remained cocked. “This is no ordinary Ethereal. This is an assassin. It would be like interrogating someone like me or you—”

“I understand, Viper. If I’m unsuccessful, I’ll bring you in.”

He continued to give me that annoyed expression. “There’s something you aren’t telling me.”

“I’m the one who got her, alright? I should handle her. That’s all.”

His eyes narrowed. “That’s right…it’s aher.”

I rolled my eyes, already knowing his assumption.

“You can’t screw an Ethereal.”

“I’m not trying to screw her—”
