Page 143 of Bang
The female made a sound of annoyance. "You already said that!"
"Yeah, but…" My words trailed off as the vehicle sped past us, going way too fast for the slick conditions.
Damn it.Just as I'd suspected, I knew that vehicle. It was Mason's. I whirled in my seat and stared out through the rear window.
My stomach clenched. It was his, alright.
And if there had been any doubt before, the fact that it was actually turning around confirmed all of my worst suspicions.
The way it looked, he was coming after us – or more accurately after his sister, who wasn't even in the car.
I sucked in a breath.Oh, shit.
It was time to buckle up, and fast.
Chapter 52
Cami
In the passenger's seat, the masked female yelled, "Oh, my God. It'shim!"She was looking forward in the rear-view mirror. But then, she whirled around to stare out the back window.
I turned to stare, too.
In the driver's seat, the guy said, "Him who?"
"Who do you think?" the female said. "It's Mason Blastoviak."
I whirled to face her. "Wait, how doyouknow?"
"None of your business," she said, turning to look at her companion. "I think he's coming after us."
The driver said, "Oh, fuck."
For once, we were in total agreement. I asked, "So, are you gonna stop?"
"Notnow," the guy said. "That fucker's crazy."
Mason wasnotcrazy. Oh, sure, he was a little abrasive and very protective when it came to people he cared about. But crazy? I didn't think so.
But soon, I was reevaluating that opinion. The further we went, the more slippery the roads became. And yet, Mason wasn't slowing down.
And neither were we.When the driver took a hard right on the next country road, we nearly spun out, coming dangerously close to slamming into a telephone pole.Good thing I'd buckled up.
And so had they.
But enough was enough.Pushing against my seatbelt, I leaned forward to say, "Seriously, just stop, alright?"
The driver's bare knuckles were white on the steering wheel. "Forget it."
"Fine," I snapped. "Then let me out."
"If you want out, go ahead. But I'm not slowing down."
And he wasn't.
The funny thing was, we weren't driving much faster than the posted speed limit. But that was a small comfort, considering the dangerous conditions. The roads were slick, and the visibility was horrendous.
And yet, when I turned to look behind us, I could still make out the hazy outline of Mason's vehicle.
