“I’m sureMrs. Argentiwill be really happy about that,” she sassed. “Can you protect me from her, too?”
I blew out a breath. Could I make Francesca do anything?
Could anyone?
Fuck it.
“Absolutely,” I lied, hoping that a pregnant Francesca would be more reasonable, then immediately laughing at the ridiculous idea.
Amber scowled at me skeptically, gnawing on her lower lip as she considered.
“There are things I’ll want,” she said, and I watched as a calculating gleam shone in her eyes.
“Of course there are.”
“I want money,” she blurted, not surprising me in the least. “Enough so that I can leave town. For good.”
“I’m sure everyone will be sad to see you go,” I drolled, and she flipped me off. “Where is it you think would be a better fit for you than Vegas?”
Amber narrowed her eyes, as though she was considering what to tell me. Eventually, she must have figured I’d find out either way.
“I’ve been thinking Miami sounded pretty nice,” she mused. “I think I’m tired of the desert.”
I couldn’t help but think that the desert was probably tired of her, too.
“Can I get new identification?” she pressed on. “If you and Enzo both end up dead, I don’t want Gregor to be able to track me down for snitching on him.”
“Why ever would he suspect you of snitching, Amber?” I said with feigned innocence.
“Because I told him everything I knew about you guys.”
Well, fuck. I was kind of wishin’ I hadn’t just promised to let her live. Lucky for Amber, she hadn’t known much; Enzo may have been fucking her, but he certainly hadn’t trusted her.
“You’re a real piece of work, you know that, Amber?”
“A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.”
“And you’ll do anyone with money, is that it?”
“Fuck off, Rocco. Can you get me what I want or not.”
Pulling out my phone, I texted Lexi the requests. After a long string of colorful words and several very disturbing GIFs, she finally admitted that she could get Amber an entirely new identity in less than thirty-six hours.
“Leave the car,” I said, taking her by the arm and pulling her to where Benny had just pulled up. “You won’t need it anymore.”
“How the hell am I gonna get outta town, then?”
Opening the back seat of Benny’s car, I stuffed Amber in the back roughly, not caring about her protests.
“Benny, take her to The Shed. Lucky’s already there.” Amber flinched at the mention of Lucky, smart enough to know she’d find no sympathy from that corner.
So much for female solidarity, hey?
“It would be in your best interest if you answered all of Lucky’s questions, Amber. She’s not nearly as forgiving as I am.” Turning back to Benny, I added, “Make sure she’s nice and secure until I get a chance to get her outta here.” I smiled at Amber’s confused look.
“What’s The Shed?”
Tossing Amber a smug look, I said, “I guess you didn’t know everything about us after all, did you?”
