“Where are you going?” she questioned as I pushed past her. “This is my house, Rock. You don’t get to answer the door inmyhouse.”
“I do when you’re half dressed,” I replied, snagging my shirt off the back of a kitchen chair and tossing it on as I went. From the grumbling behind me, I figured she was graciously conceding the point.
Checking through the peephole, I opened the door to find a grinning Benny standing on Mia’s porch, a pickup truck I didn’t recognize idling at the curb behind him.
“Right on time, man,” I said, slapping him on the back. “Thanks for coming through on such short notice.”
“Wasn’t me,” Benny said gruffly. “Lexi is the real miracle worker in this instance.”
I pursed my lips, but said nothing.
If I complimented Lexi, even when she wasn’t around, she’d hear about it and thenI’dnever hear the end of it.
“What else?” I asked without preamble. I was hoping there was some more information on Gregor, because while Trick had followed him from the hospital yesterday, the slippery fuck had gotten away in traffic, and we hadn’t been able to track him down again yet.
“Lexi said the cops called in three more bodies last night. Looks like all three of ‘em were overdoses.” I clenched my teeth; sometimes I hated this fuckin’ town.
“Two more missing persons reports, too,” Benny added quietly, and I knew I had better check up on Sway, make sure he wasn’t one of ‘em.
“This Chemist fucker is really starting to piss me off, Ben.”
“You and me both, man,” Benny said, his eyes on the pickup and whoever was driving it.
Before I could say anything else, Mia was there, yanking the door open and standing on the porch in another pair of those sexy as fuck leggings and a baggy t-shirt, her hair now scraped back in a messy ponytail.
“Who was—oh. Hi, Benny.”
“Mia,” Benny said with a chin lift. Then he turned to me and discretely handed me the item I needed. “I’m out.”
With that, Benny headed back down the sidewalk to where the jacked-up truck waited for him, and now that I was really looking, I recognized Enzo’s new operations manager, Ryker, sitting in the driver’s seat, window down and sunglasses on.
I watched him watching Benny as he rounded the front of the truck, not taking his eyes off my boy until he threw the truck into gear, and they drove off.
“I better go shower for work,” Mia said softly, but I stopped her with a hand on her arm.
“Hold up, Doc. I got somethin’ to talk to you about.” Sliding my fingers down the inside of her wrist, I clasped Mia’s hand lightly, towing her behind me off the porch and into the yard.
“Listen,” I started lamely when we reached the sidewalk. “I don’t want you to freak out.”
“Oh, my God,” she cried, immediately freaking out. “What happened? Is Frankie alright? Is it Greg? What is it, Rocco?”
“Damn it, Mia. I saiddon’tfreak out.”
She took a deep breath, but stilled, her eyes narrowed at me.
“When has telling someone not to do something ever worked?”
She had a point.
Now that I was standing here, the whole thing seemed stupid. Mia was a proud woman; she seemed like she’d always owned her shit, and probably wouldn’t appreciate me coming in and trying to white knight her.
Still, I’d already done it, so there was no going back now.
“Here,” I said, holding my hand out like a ridiculous game show host. “This is for you.”
She didn’t say anything, just stared at me again.
She seemed to be doing a lot of staring.
