“You got it, junior boss,” he said, and hung up before I could give him any more shit.
Tossing my phone down beside me, I leaned my head back on the couch and closed my eyes. When the fuck was Enzo coming back? I wasn’t cut out for this leadership crap.
This was why we worked as a team; having more people to share the workload was what it was all about.
And like a bolt of lightning, my thoughts suddenly flashed to Mia, as they tended to do.
It had been three weeks since I’d last talked to her, since I’d tasted her and heard her moan my name, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to stop thinking about her.
Like how hard it must be for her to be a single parent. How raising a kid and being a fuckin’ doctor must be some seriously exhausting shit. And, like, her kid wasn’t even very old. He was maybe four or five, if my memories of the kids I’d been around growing up were accurate. At that age, kids were more like hyperactive puppies than people, running around, talking endlessly, and messy. Good Christ, were kids messy.
I wondered if her kid was messy.
Jasper. She’d said his name was Jasper, and I thought that was cool as shit.
I couldn’t image how hard things must have been for her since he’d been born.
I guessed that explained her prickly attitude, though; a person didn’t have a lot of energy for bullshit in a situation like that.
My mind continued to drift, wondering if I was the world’s biggest prick for ghosting her like I’d done, or if it was just better that I stay away completely, giving her space to focus on the things that really mattered to her, like her son.
Sitting there, reclined on my favorite couch in the back room of my favorite club, the low thump of the bass lulled me into a light sleep, dreams of breathy moans and cool blue eyes dancing in my brain.
I wasn’t sure how long I’d slept, but when my phone rang again, my heart started thrashing in my chest, my body seeming to know before I did that something wasn’t right.
That was proven true when I answered Trick’s call.
“Rocco,” he said solemnly, no hint of a joke anywhere in his tone. “Rocco, I think you need to get down here, man.”
“What?” I asked dazedly, running one hand over my face. “What the fuck happened, Trick?”
“It’s Amber, man. Looks like that Russian prick was more pissed off than I thought.” Trick paused for a second before he added, “He busted her up, man. Pretty good, too, from what I can see.”
That stupid fucking asshole.
“Where is she, Trick?”
“He—” Trick hesitated; I could feel the tension radiating right down through the phone. “He took her to the hospital, Rock.”
My blood turned to ice in my veins.
“Which hospital?”
But I didn’t really need to ask.
Because I was certain I already knew.
Chapter twenty-seven
Mia
“Ouch.Thathurts!”
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from rolling my eyes. I was so over today. There were only a few minutes left in my shift, and I couldn’t get out of this hospital fast enough.
“My apologies, Miss. Davidson,” I said mildly, stuffing my irritation down. “I’ll try to be more gentle.”
I’d barely touched her, but I didn’t begrudge her the outburst. I had found that women in her position often lashed out in situations like this because it gave them a sense of power. One they typically didn’t have at home.
