Dismissing them as being unimportant, the captive winced when she stood up, then shuffled to the door.

Grace caught Zoe’s eye, so she hung back to hear what she had to say.“We can’t trust some of these women,” she whispered.

“I know,” Zoe agreed.“That last one just now is the worst. Her soul is completely black.”

Grace wasn’t surprised.“What sort of crimes has she committed?”

“Murder, identity theft, blackmail, fraud and a bunch of other stuff,” Zoe replied.“She’d just been arrested for killing an old man in his home after robbing him when the Rapture happened.”

“Talk about having the luck of the devil,” Grace murmured in disgust.

“We’ll need to speak to the guys about what we should do with them,” Zoe said.

Screams came from downstairs as they left the room. One of the girls had spotted Camriel and was in a panic, thinking he was one of their attackers.

Rushing past the last victim they’d freed, Grace and Zoe moved at normal human speed to try to defuse the situation.

Clustered in the lobby, some of the women had grabbed chairs to try to fend off the warriors.Amaros and Camriel were waiting for the cambions at the bottom of the stairs.

Chapter Thirty-Five

––––––––

CAMRIEL DIDN’T NEEDthe reproachful look Amaros gave him for allowing himself to be spotted. He was already mentally berating himself. It was a relief when Zoe and Grace came racing down the stairs to their rescue.

“They’re with us!”Zoe called out.“They’re the ones who killed your captors!”

“They’ll kill us next,” one of the women with a black soul called out, trying to incite a riot. Her mouth was twisted into a sly grin.“We need to rush them and take their guns!”

The final victim reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped in front of their rescuers.“Don’t be stupid!”she snarled.“These people are our best chance of staying alive.”She lowered her voice when the shouts died down.“They can take us somewhere safe and teach us how to defend ourselves,” she said, trying to manipulate them into doing what she wanted.

“We should stay here,” the girl Grace’s age said.Unlike the others, she’d pulled her sheet tight, so it showed off her body rather than hiding it.“This place is big enough for all of us,” she went on, eyeing Amaros and Camriel hungrily.

“We’re just passing through,” Amaros lied smoothly.“I suggest you take the vehicles that are parked outside. The keys are in the ignitions.Grab whatever you need from the supplies the men stocked, then find somewhere far away from here to hunker down.”

“I don’t want to stay here,” a woman said tearfully.“I want to get the hell out of this place and never look back.”
