“You promise?”she asked, half-jokingly.
“I do,” he said seriously.
“Get a room,” Grace mumbled from the back seat.“Some of us are trying to sleep.”
“I don’t want to stop at another motel,” Amaros said, withdrawing his hand.
“He’s so clueless,” the kid said.“I was suggesting you two should have sex to break the constant tension.”
“Oh,” the knight said.He crossed his legs, hiding his groin from Zoe.She almost barked out a laugh. He might think she was a monster because she was a cambion, but he was clearly attracted to her.The mere thought of having sex with her was enough to turn him on, apparently.
“Go back to sleep,” Zoe told them both.“We’ll reach our destination tomorrow.”
An hour later, she rounded a sharp bend in the road and saw a blockade just ahead. Her quick reflexes saved them from slamming into the pile of vehicles. She spun the wheel and floored it, barely managing to zoom past the wreckage.Grace screamed when the car slammed into a hidden log and became airborne.
Amaros cursed and gripped the dashboard as they sailed a few yards before crashing to the ground. The car landed in a ditch and toppled onto its side.Showered with food and drinks they’d pilfered, Zoe was stunned from hitting her head on the window.Amaros struggled to undo his seatbelt, which seemed to be stuck.
Jubilant shouts and cheers came from behind the blockade, growing closer by the second.Bells were ringing in Zoe’s ears, but her head was beginning to clear.Blood from a gash in her temple dribbled into her eye.Blinking it away, she winced when her door was yanked open and a flashlight shone into her eyes.
“We’ve got ourselves a pretty one, boys!”the man wielding the flashlight shouted gleefully. He pulled a knife while two more men peered into the car.Her seatbelt was removed, then hands dragged Zoe out of the car and took her to the ground.
Chapter Eleven
––––––––
AMAROS ROARED INSIDEthe car, enraged at the ambush. He could smell blood and instinctively knew it was Zoe’s.Grace managed to get her door open just wide enough to slip outside, leaving him the sole occupant.
The knight got the stubborn seatbelt off and grabbed hold of the dashboard. He rose to his feet just in time to see Grace running towards the trio of men who had Zoe pinned to the ground.Barreling into the scumbags, she knocked two of them off her friend. One tried to backhand her, but she dodged the blow.“Ha, ha, you’re too slow, grandpa,” the kid taunted him.She took off running into the darkness with the assailant on her heels.
“Deal with her boyfriend when he shows his face,” the knife wielding man said. He’d pinned Zoe down with a foot on her stomach.Leaning down, he grinned.“I get first dibs with you,” he said gloatingly.
“Like hell you do,” Zoe denied and grabbed hold of his leg.Heaving him as hard as she could, she tossed him away and sat up.The guy hit the ground hard, dropping his knife as he rolled for a few feet.
Amaros leaped out of the car and crashed into the guy who’d pulled a gun to keep watch over him.The weapon went off and the bullet smashed the back window of the car.The other man scrambled to his feet, but it was already too late.Amaros was on him in an instant like an avenging angel. It only took one punch to destroy the human.Zoe grimaced at the sickening crunch as he dropped to the ground with his face caved in.
“Are you okay?”Grace asked, reappearing at Zoe’s side to help her to her feet.
