Story: The Strategist

“But God had other plans for us.” I draped an arm around her shoulders. “He wanted you to come to my house tonight.” I looked at her. “And I’m so glad you came.”

Thunder boomed, and Vivian jumped at the sound.

I embraced her. “Thunder snow is something special.”

Lightning flashed through the dark sky while snow whirled around from the howling wind. She relaxed in my embrace, but said nothing.

I pulled back and looked at her. “You came here tonight because you needed answers. I’ll give them to you if you agree to one thing.”

She arched an eyebrow. “Why is there an ultimatum formyquestions?”

I smirked and shrugged. “Because I need a yes from you.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Then I won’t ask.”

“Then you’ll never know the reason. And you’re dying to know.”

“Do you want to duel about it?” she inquired.

“No. Because if we duel, I’ll end up devouring you again.”

She pouted. “Agree to what?”

“Date me.”

Amusement gleamed in her eyes.

“You said you’d give me an answer when you’re ready to date. We just did something that only couples do.” I pressed my lips to hers. “Say yes and make me a fortunate man.”

“That doesn’t sound like a question.”

I smiled. “Will you be my girlfriend, Tulip?”

She rose onto her toes. “I’m not sure where this relationship will go, but I’m willing to give it a chance. So yes.”

I gave her a wet, loud, and sloppy kiss, and her stomach growled.

“Let’s eat, and then I’ll answer all your questions.”

VIVIAN

I satat his kitchen table, which was smaller than the dining table. The turn of events baffled and excited me. I didn’t come here this evening to end up being his girlfriend.

I glanced out the window where fat snowflakes covered the sky. “Can I help you with anything?”

“Nope. Just sit and watch me heat up food.”

I smiled at his quick movements. He was warming up meat lasagna and Thai chicken basil fried rice.

I picked up my phone, texted Grace about being stuck at a friend’s house because of the storm, apologized for the inconvenience, and asked if Kaylee could stay over until I got back. Grace responded immediately, telling me not to worry and that Violet was thrilled to spend more time with Kaylee.

Next, I texted Kaylee, who was probably asleep.

Vivian:Hey, how you doing? I’m stuck at a friend’s house, thanks to this blizzard. I’ll see you on Monday when the roads are cleared and it’s safe to drive. You can stay with Violet and Grace until I come back.

Kaylee:Okay. Where are you?
