Story: Tempted By Poison
Now,thatbrings me back. I punch him hard in the jaw, then I dig my gun into his temple with so much force that it could crack through his skull. “I told you to not speak of her, and I meant that. If you don't want this bullet to end your life, then you may want to rethink your next words.”
I don't need his pity, his sympathy means nothing coming from a fucker like him. He grunts with an agonizing groan, nodding his head in compliance.
I curl my upper lip. “Now, tell us about the man you answer to.” I reach down at his collar and underneath there it lies. The pendant. I snatched it off. “I want to know who they are. And you'll tell us every last thing.”
He closes his eyes and releases a shuddering breath. “I can only tell you their names. I don't know where they stay. I never met the person because I worked with Vi—” He jerks and his eyes bulge. I cock back, looking at him with pinched brows.
Anita steps forward. “Speak,” she demands.
Richard huffs loud and grips his temple. “His name is—Aargh!” He quickly stands, ignoring the gun to his head. I fix myself upright and place my arm out in front of Anita.
“My head!” He runs to his desk and my gun flies to him.
“What the fuck are you doing!” I bark.
Mal screams. “Step away from the desk!”
We each stroll to him with our weapons aimed at him.
“It hurts!” he shouts, then grips his head again like an excruciating pain is digging into his brain. “Aargh!”
He hollers and hollers, and we each shift back on one accord, not knowing what the fuck his problem is. Then he pulls out a pocketknife from his desk.
Mal’s points. “I’m going to shoot.”
“Wicked, wait!” Anita snaps.
I watch with precaution and also fascination. What is happening to him? The mayor screams while he raises the knife to the back of his neck and—
SPLAT!
His head explodes, the meat from his brain splatter and discharge into tiny pieces. Blood splashes and his remains splatter, coating our faces and clothes in his particles. His headless body drops on top of his desk before dropping to the floor.
Mal lets out a high pitch scream—one I've never heard from her in my life, and Anita gasps with a slur of curse words. And I stand there, appalled by what just happened.
“Ahhh shit!” Mal screeches. “Did it get in my mouth?” she says, rushing to Anita with her face painted in blood and pieces of his brain. I blink, looking at the blood that drains from in a large, dark red puddle.
“We need to get the cameras and go.” I take Anita’s arm, stepping back. “Bedford, wipe all the cameras from his surveillance. Keep the ones in his office for evidence.”
“Ronan.” Anita stands in front of me with her palm flat on my chest. “What just happened?”
I look at her blood coated face. Then back at the body. “I don’t know. But I think we’ll find out soon enough.”
Much sooner.
