Thank you. I knew you’d see where I was coming from, insecure or not.
So now my main questions were:
Number One: Will my husband still love me, as he promised, through thick and thin?
Number Two: Does Genie Stacie represent a threat or not?
Number Three: If so, am I going to murder her?
Number Four: After I’ve murdered her (see Question Number One)?
In record time I’d managed to twist myself into such a knot I was a live wire threatening to electrocute anyone who had enough guts to come anywhere near me. And on top of everything else, no,morethan anything else, I hated the way Julian treated her. Like hecherishedher.Genie Stacie was abandoned. Genie Stacie never had any friends. Genie Stacie is fragile. Genie Stacie needs me.
AndIneeded Genie Stacie to disappear.
Did Julian feel validated by Genie Stacie’s attention? Was I neglecting him? Was that what all this was about, and now it was too late to get my husband back? Had I let him fall out of love with me?
‘Are you happy, Julian?’ I blurted out.
‘As long as you and I are like this, I’m happy,’ he whispered against my mouth, and I wondered whether the toothpaste still held its freshness before I decided it didn’t really matter and kissed him deep and hard.
‘Come here, you,’ he murmured as he pulled my legs around his waist and peeled off my top. I pulled his shirt off in turn and leaned back and admired his ripped body, running my hands up his arms as he kissed the side of my throat, which he knew was my Immediate Ignition Button.
And then the house phone rang.
I sighed and peeled myself away from him and went over to the phone, already knowing who it was.
‘Hi, Erica, is Julian there? I tried his cell phone but it’s off.’
Damn right it was.
‘Yep, just a second,’ I said and stonily passed the house phone to him. He tossed his bunched-up shirt to the side and sighed, possibly for my benefit. I turned and left him to it. It was a good thing we were leaving for our little trip alone. Now I’d have to sex the hell out of him to erase The Genie Stacie Effect.

As Julian drove our Jeep high up into the hills, he hummed along happily to an old John Legend song, ‘All of Me’. Well, I was definitely going to give himmy allthis weekend. Anything to bring us back to where we used to be. I was going all out. Two nights, just for us, in one of the most beautiful hotels in the region. Operation seduction was under way.
I lifted my legs onto the dashboard with the oldest trick in the world of my stockings having a run in them.
‘To what do I owe this lovely surprise getaway?’ he murmured as his eyes darted to my legs which, I have to say, didn’t look that bad from this angle. Had the rice cakes and carrot sticks finally started to work their magic?
I rubbed my calves gently, up and down. ‘Nothing, just to you and me.’
‘Well, then, Hello, you…’ he drawled.
Yes!
‘Hello, yourself,’ I whispered huskily. ‘I’m wearing a new bra I bought while you were away. Too bad I won’t be needing it this weekend…’
In the penumbra, I saw him swallow, steal me the sexiest look I’d ever seen, and drag his eyes back to the road, which was twisting and turning up the mountain now. Perhaps this was not a great idea. Maybe I should wait until—
‘Aren’t you going to show me?’ he whispered.
Ooh good, he was hanging off the edge of his seat now. Just as long as we didn’t end up hanging off the edge of the cliff as a result.
‘I might. But can you handle it, with these curves?’ I quipped.
His eyes twinkled at mydouble entendre, the sap.
