‘I’m sure I want to at least try.’
‘OK. But only if it doesn’t stress you out.’
‘Oh, I’m sure I can find the silver lining in having to have sex with you,’ I teased.
‘You little devil.’
‘By the way, is this injury going to put the project on hold? I don’t want to rush you or boss you around.’
He grinned. A painful half-grin. ‘You mean like you usually do?’
‘Me? What are you talking about?’
‘Oh, well, let’s see. The thermal vests I have to wear in the winter or you have a sulk? Or the vegetables you pile into me?’
‘But I’m just trying to take care of you…’
‘Honey, I’ve got this far without you mothering me to death. I think I have a chance of surviving without your cauliflower.’
I was about to say that the minute he’d made his own decisions he’d gone and jumped onto a horse bareback, but I decided against it. Why wake the dog that was falling asleep? So I clamped my mouth shut. ‘Right. Got it.’
‘You’re not offended?’ he asked.
‘I will be if you turn around and tell me you don’t love me anymore.’
He stared at me, trying to sit up. ‘Erica, please. You have to stop this madness. You’re behaving like a teenager.’
‘No, I’m being practical. Say you wanted a divorce. Would you tell me?’
He groaned. ‘I’d have to, wouldn’t I?’
‘Just answer my question, will you?’
He sighed. ‘Listen to me, and listen good. I don’t want a divorce. Yes, recently you’re being a real pain in the arse, but this is just a bad spell and it will all go away once you understand Genie Stacie has no hold whatsoever over me. So how’s that for an answer?’
‘Bloody good.’
‘I just wish that you would talk to me instead of inventing twisted scenarios in that maniac mind of yours,’ he breathed as I flipped the cold cloth over. ‘Ouch, easy, babe.’
I smiled down at him. He hadn’t called me that in a long time. I was gladIwas still his babe instead of a dumb blonde with long legs.
‘How do you put up with me?’ I asked as I nuzzled his neck.
‘Just tell me what’s really bothering you, Erica.’
Ouch. Ack. ‘I just… hate not being in control of my life – of this…babything,’ I whispered, surprising even me. My shrink in Boston would have applauded me for my candor.
At that, he groaned. ‘Honey – you are in control of practically everything else.’
‘I am.’ I nodded, then looked up. ‘I’m sorry. I’m bossy – you’re right.’
‘That’s OK. I like you that way.’
‘You do?’ Of course I knew he did, but I just liked hearing it.
‘Hell, yes. You’re an absolute control freak but that’s fine because I like the way you like things too.’
‘Yeah?’
