I opened my mouth but shut it again at the look on her face. Boy, she was good. She had me enthralled in two seconds flat. ‘And then…?’
‘After dinner, you leave the leftovers and dishes on the table – you’ll need them later – and then you entice him upstairs with The Look.’
‘What look?’
She smiled. ‘The female, come hitherlook that every man recognizes – it’s universal, yet everyone has their own. You have yours; I have mine.’
‘Right.’
‘Light the candle while you are both undressing—’
‘Who says we undress?’ I quipped.
‘Erica – do you want this baby or not?’ she scolded me and I sobered instantly.
‘Sorry. Go on. Please.’
‘Use anything and everything in this kit to stimulate each other’s senses. It’s not about sex. It’s aboutconnecting– feeling the other. It’s a joining of two souls, not just two bodies, you know.’
I groaned inwardly. Time to dig out my mini-Kama Sutra? I might have even thrown it away. Julian and I didn’t need it. We were completely happy with each other. And yet… you never knew. Was there a baby-making section I’d missed?
‘Just take your time, Erica. Don’t think of how many times you’re doing it – just think of how much you enjoy each other’s company, in and out of the bed.’
‘Gotcha…’
‘And… start taking this every morning on an empty stomach.’ She shoved the glass bottle full of some green cloudy liquid. Not stinging nettles again?
‘What the hell is that?’
‘Aloe vera,’ she pronounced itAlloway Vayra. ‘This will clean your system completely of all toxins and—’ she shrugged ‘—who knows? You might have abambinoon the way this time next month.’
Fat chance. I unscrewed the cap and sniffed suspiciously. ‘Whoa, what are you trying to do, kill me?’ I sniffed again. ‘Is there booze in here? The morning’s looking up.’
‘Well, it’s a part of a natural fermentation process, yes.’
‘I’ve never heard of such—’
‘You won’t even try it?’
‘Damn right I will.’
She grinned. ‘Good. Drink a half-espresso-cupful every morning. It should last you about a month. I’ve got some more where that came from.’
‘Thank you, Renata.’
‘You’re welcome. And one more thing.’
‘Yeah?’
‘Havefun – it’s not a chore!’
She was right. After our last bout of make-up sex, getting back to the baby-making business almost felt like a chore. Not that we didn’t enjoy it, but Julian seemed to think that reading the same script over and over again made us learn our lines better. Well, it didn’t because the whole time lately I’d be thinking about the baby, imagining my teeny-tiny egg venturing out of an ovary, hoping to meet a pack of his big bad wolves, hoping the best would sink his teeth into it.
I also started to imagine I could feel my egg nestling into my uterus and Julian’s swimmers roaring,Mission accomplished!Just how much did we women hurt ourselves, hoping and imagining too much when we should just relax and singQue sera, sera, whatever will be, will be? But of course you know me, the supreme control freak. I could never relax and sing tothattune.
If anything, with Genie Stacie gone, I wasn’t so insecure when Julian announced he was off to the States again in a few days.
