Story: Rebel Obsession
The man didn’t so much as move a muscle.
“Seriously. I’m fine.”
“If I go back to my room, I’m just going to toss and turn all night worrying about you.”
I folded my arms over my chest. “Since when do you care about anyone but yourself?”
He rubbed his bare arms briskly. “I care about people. You, in particular.”
“Because I’m your sister?”
“You’re not my sister.” He shivered in the darkness.
I took in what he was wearing. A pair of flannel pajama bottoms and a white wifebeater singlet. “You need a robe and slippers.”
“I’m not eighty.”
“You are cold though.”
“I’m fine. Go back to sleep.”
I sighed, knowing there was zero chance of rest while he was sitting there in the corner. “Are you really not going back to your bed?”
“Not until Fang wakes up and is actually keeping an eye on you.”
I rolled my eyes and raised the edge of the blankets. “Get in then.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Are you serious?”
“I can’t handle watching you sitting there shivering. It was probably your chattering teeth that woke me up in the first place.”
“It was probably Fang’s fart that woke you up, actually. Echoed right around the room.”
I fought back the urge to laugh. “Just get in.”
To my surprise, he pushed slowly to his feet and padded across the thick carpet. He stared down at me and the space I was offering him in the king-size bed. Fang and I took up most of the room, but there was enough for Vaughn if he decided to take it.
Some part of me really wanted him to take it.
Probably the part that got horny just looking at his biceps.
“If you try to Dutch oven me so I have to breathe in Fang’s fart stench, I’m not going to be impressed, Roach. I will drag you under with me so fast. Just watch.”
Despite his protests, he slid into the bed, and I dropped the blankets over his shoulder.
Like they had a mind of their own, my fingers sought out his arms. Maybe to rub away the cold.
Maybe because it was a good excuse to touch him.
But I recoiled the minute my fingertips met his skin. He was icy.
“How long have you been sitting there watching me sleep?”
“Hours.”
My heart squeezed. As much as he’d surprised me, there was something about the way he wanted to care for me that was anything but creepy.
We lay on our sides, facing each other, barely a few inches between us. But the darkness made it less weird. Even this close up, I couldn’t see every detail of his face.
