Story: Merciless Monster
“Missing you. Is Angelo still up?”
“No, I put him to bed about half an hour ago. He’s exhausted. Or is that me?”
“I imagine you must be, darling. It’s been a crazy few weeks. How are you adjusting to Texas?”
“Pretty good, considering. I got a job today.”
“Oh, wonderful! Well done, Mia. Where?”
“A doctor’s office. He’s very nice.”
“Is the pay decent?”
“It’s not going to make me fabulously wealthy, but it’s a good job. I’m happy.”
“How are you really?”
“Sad, mostly. I miss Dante so much, Mom. I didn’t think it would hurt this much.”
“I’m sorry you’re having such a tough time of it, my child. But you’re doing the right thing for Angelo.”
“Am I?”
“Yes, you are.”
“I hope so, because that’s the only thing keeping me here—and halfway sane.”
“It will get easier. Hang in there.”
“I’ll try. How are you and Dad?”
“We were thinking of coming over to visit soon.”
“No. Please don’t do that, Mom. Paolo will be watching you guys.”
“Are you sure? He must be back in Italy by now.”
“I doubt it. Dante will no doubt order him to stay until he finds me.”
My mom sighs.
“I’m sorry, Mom. We miss you too. But I have to be careful. Dante isn’t in the boy scouts.”
“Understatement.”
“I’m bushed, Mom. Think I’ll hit the hay early tonight.”
“Sleep well, darling. Keep in touch.”
“I will. Thanks for the call. Love you.”
“Love you too. Goodnight.”
I’m not the best company or conversationalist at the moment. I’m tired and depressed. Not a good combination. And to make it worse, I don't have Mom or Gina here to talk me off the proverbial ledge. It’s lonely.
Cut the pity party, Mia. It could be a lot worse.
It could be worse. Not by much, but hey.
