Story: Merciless Monster
“Arnold, do you know what Mia’s pin code is for her cell phone?”
“What? Why?”
“I’ll track her cell.”
“Can you do that?”
“Yes. I can’t believe I didn't think of it sooner. There’s a feature on a cell phone called find my phone. We joked about it once when she said…never mind, not important. Anyway, if I can get into her phone then I can track it and find her location.”
“Hang on. Mia has a list in her drawer of her pin codes. She’s almost as bad as I am when it comes to remembering that sort of thing.”
Arnold and I leave the office and go to Mia’s bedroom. I open the nightstands drawer and start looking. Arnold goes through the desk drawer.
“Here,” he says, “found it.”
He hands me the paper.
“Great. Here it is. I need to use the PC in the office.”
“Of course.”
I dial Bruno’s number. It rings a few times before he answers.
“Boss?”
“Bruno, I’m going to track Mia’s cell phone and see if I can nail down a location. Where are you?”
“I just left the deli. I spoke to a waitress there who said she saw Mia going into the bathroom. She says she’ didn;t see her after that. I checked and there’s a backdoor to the place. I found Mia’s scarf in the parking lot behind the deli. Whoever took her, brought her out the back.”
“Fuckers! Okay. Come back to the ranch.”
“What about Lucian?”
I look at Arnold. He can’t hear my conversation, but I know what he’ll say if anything happens to Lucian.
“Bring the fucking idiot with. I’ll deal with him later. He’s lucky I need all the manpower I can lay my hands on. Tell the asshole he’s just hit the jackpot. He’d better be of use to me or else.”
“Yes, Boss.”
“Okay, the PC is on.”
“Thank you, Arnold.”
I take a seat at the desk and open the website where I type in the details of Mia’s phone.
“Let’s pray Mia hasn’t changed her pin code since writing down this one,” I say.
“Please, God.”
“There! Found it!”
“Oh, thank God. Where is she? Can you see it?”
“Yeah. There she is,” I say, pointing to a location on the map on the screen. Now we know where to look.”
“We’d better hurry, Dante. Who knows what kind of people these are and what they’re subjecting my daughter to. We have to leave as soon as possible.”
“Oh, no. You’re not coming with us, Arnold. I'm sorry, but I need you here with Angelo. You’re his grandfather and he is comfortable with you. He needs you more now than I do. I’ve got this. Trust me.”
“What? Why?”
“I’ll track her cell.”
