Story: Merciless Monster
“I’m thinking about it.”
“It’s true, Mia. You are a vision.”
My anger is abating. This man has a curious power of me. It was evident the first time we met and I can tell that my feelings toward him haven’t changed a bit.
“Are you in pain? I have painkillers for you.”
“No. I’m alright. Thank you.”
“This is crazy. I can’t believe it’s you.”
“I know what you mean. I almost had a heart attack when I saw you.”
“I don’t know about you, but I could do with a drink. Do you have anything?”
“I do, but I’m not going to give you alcohol. You’re on some pretty strong meds and alcohol isn’t a good idea.”
“I wasn’t planning on finishing the bottle. One drink? I promise not to drive,” he smiles.
“Okay. Just one. I’ll be back in a bit.”
My hands are trembling while I pour Dante a shot of whiskey. I down a shot to steady my nerves before returning to the room with his drink.
“Here. It’s whiskey.”
“Uh, you’re an angel. Thanks.”
I watch as Dante throws back his drink. I can’t help staring at him, watching his every move. He is so handsome. His face has aged a little since the last time we were together, but not by much. In fact, Dante is one of those men who is guaranteed to age like a fine wine.
“How is Gina?”
I’m grateful for his question. I’d hate to do something stupid, like throw myself at an injured man.
“She’s fine.”
“Still happily married?”
“Yeah. Don't you guys talk?”
“Not really, no. Our families aren’t that close. Despite appearances, the De Lucas and the Carusos don’t see much of each other.”
“Why is that?”
“It’s complicated.”
“Strange.”
“What is?”
“That’s what Gina said when I asked her the same question.”
“So, you asked about me?” he grins.
“Don’t get any ideas,” I smile back.
“Come on, Mia. You can’t deny that we had something pretty racy. An undeniable attraction, even.”
“You were a holiday romance, Dante De Luca.”
