Story: Wrong Turn

FUCK AROUND AND FIND OUT

SUMMER

I don’t know what the fuck is going on, or how Amber can be this calm, but when she tells me to get everyone in the SUV and lock the doors, I don’t argue.

I know there’s a side of her she doesn’t show anyone.

It’s the part of her that makes me feel safe, seen, and cared for.

We bonded immediately, our mutual darkness blending and weaving together, forming an unbreakable soul tie.

Standing on the porch, she glares at me through the glass.

Her eyes say it all, lock the fucking doors.

I gulp, not wanting to leave her out there, alone and vulnerable.

But then she pulls the glock from the back of her pants, nodding sternly at me.

Okay then, whoever fucked around is about to find out, if they’re still here.

I press the button on the key, locking the doors and setting the alarm.

That way if something happens, she’ll hear it when out of view.

With one last look, she slips in through the open front door, closing it behind her.

“Okay, please tell me I’m not the only one that saw that,” Bridget says, breaking the tense silence.

“Saw what?” I reply, playing dumb. There’s probably a reason Amber didn’t flail the gun around in front of everyone and cause a shit storm, so I won’t solidify any of their theories.

“Summer, are you fucking blind? She had a gun!”

Shit.

“I didn’t see a gun,” I mutter.

“She had a gun?” Savannah gasps.

“Yeah, she did. Maybe if your eyes weren’t glued to your phone every three seconds, you would’ve seen it!

” Bridget’s getting hysterical again, and it wears on my ever-fraying nerves.

Savannah rolls her eyes, going back to her phone.

Fallon huffs, her eyes jumping between me and Bridget.

I shoot her a shut the fuck up look, but she breaks.

“I saw the gun too,” she whispers.

Double shit.

“SEE!” Bridget whisper-shouts from the passenger seat, flapping her hands around like a fucking moron.

Fallon looks annoyed, and I wonder just how much she knows. “I saw you hand it to her, Summer.”

“YOU HAD THE GUN!” Okay, Bridget you need to shut the fuck up before I boot you out of this vehicle. “Why are you lying to us?”

Fuck, I hate how catty women can get. Savannah couldn’t possibly care less about what’s going on, snapping tongue-out selfies in the back seat that probably say ‘ Gonna get murdered. Winky face ’.

Fallon and Bridget gang up on me, and I lash out like a cornered animal, going on the defence.

“Maybe instead of getting your twats in a twist, y’all should be happy she’s in there alone making sure our cabin is safe. ”

“Well,” Bridget says with her face in a knot, “why did you have the gun?”

“Yeah, what were you doing with a gun, Summer?” Fallon mimics.

I wish both of them would shut the fuck up and leave me alone.

“Amber gave it to me in the woods. You know, when y’all three were busy shitting your pants in fear.

She didn’t actually leave to go pee, you imbeciles, she went to make sure nothing was following us, or hunting us.

Y’all want to get eaten by a bear, or ambushed by a cougar? ”

“No,” they both mumble in quiet unison.

“I didn’t think so. Now instead of bitching about her having a gun, maybe thank her for being the one smart enough to bring one to keep us ALL safe.

” They both turn away from me without another word, and I’m happy for it.

Maybe we shouldn’t have brought everyone on this trip with us after all, but then that would nullify the point of it in the first place.

Rain starts to pelt the windshield, coming hard and fast, the sky unleashing a torrent of half-hail, half-rain upon the mountain.

I snatch up the cookies that were left in the SUV, stuffing two of them into my mouth, while debating whether or not to kick the bitches out into the storm.

The wind howls with such fury the smaller trees threaten to snap, the crazed sound of the rustling leaves adding to the cacophony of sounds created by the downpour.

Amber better hurry the fuck up because I’m not about to share my snack with these hoes if we’re stuck out here much longer, and if they try to take my cookies there will be a real murder to deal with.
