Nix thought about it. “Nah … didn’t have anyone asking for a long time.”
“Ahh.” The doc managed to say so much without saying anything. “Well, I have a feeling you’ll get tired of hearing it soon.”
He wouldn’t bet on it.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” he said instead.
“Right here is where I’m needed most,” Ryder replied simply. His eyes flashed the yellow of his wolf. “If I get my hands on the doctor running this show …”
His voice was a growl, and I knew his wolf was close to the surface.
“Me too, brother, Me too,” Nix murmured.
By the time everyone was ready, it was nighttime, and they were headed to the warehouse. Leaving Jason, the bouncer, behind as a general lookout and also in case Zander needed anything, but mostly to protect the doc until they needed him. The alpha had served too, albeit in a different branch.
The van ride to the warehouse was quiet as they were all getting prepared for what was ahead. When they got to the location, they parked and climbed out.
“Okay,” Nix started. “Dax, you’re on diversion to get the guards out of the warehouse.
“Got it.” Dax nodded.
“And Mad, you’re going to the left of the building, while Zander will go to the right. I think the controls are in Tre’s office, and it’s on that side, windows high up got a small crack in it.”
“Sounds good, boss,” Zander teased.
“You got the shit ready to take out the shock collars?” he asked.
“Yup, although …” Zander stopped speaking.
“Although?” He prompted.
He shook his head. “Nah, never mind, we good.”
“You sure?” Nix checked again. He trusted Zan, but nothing could go wrong.
“I’m sure,” Zan said.
“Finn, Ro, and I will clear the omegas out and get them to the bus,” Nix said. He trusted his guys, but he wanted to find Cal and Sam. “If all goes well, Tre should come out with the diversion, and y’all can handle him. Got it?”
They all nodded in agreement. Nix made sure his vest was on properly, then put his helmet on too. He kept the light on it off, not that he nor any of them needed it with their shifter sight.
They crept through the trees, silently moving closer to the warehouse. Nix stood on the south side of the building, with Zander hiding in the trees. He looked over his shoulder, making sure Zander was there, and he waited for his cue. Nix closed his eyes to focus on the sounds. A loud wolf howl echoed through the trees.Dax. It came again. This time louder. Nix waited for the guards to come out and investigate. When sound came a third time, he heard the door open. A guard came out of the warehouse and looked around, then Dax’s howl came once more. This time Maddox joined in for good measure.
“Charlie!” a guard called. Another guard came out and moved towards the direction Dax stood.” But then Maddox howled this time, and he heard them arguing about what direction it had come from and moving further to investigate.
Nix looked to where Zan was and raised three fingers for three minutes. They needed to be in place before Zander did what he did best. They all started the timers on their watches.
Nix, Ro, and Finn hurried and ducked inside. He made sure to keep his breathing even as he listened.
“Split up, and wait for the timer, then the collars should be turned off.” He didn’t bother raising his voice since he knew they could hear him.
Tre had left earlier, and they hadn’t seen him return. He usually left at night. Dax had tracked him the night before and it seemed he had a place in town. But his movements weren’t predictable, except for this small window. It was one of the main reasons they chose to make their move now. Nix paused for a moment and listened; there was no one moving in there. Good. Right then, the lights went out.
Fuck. Zander must have overloaded the system. It was definitely him. Although darkness worked for all of them with their sight, so he slipped into the room that he’d been led into the first time he came.
“Nix!” Sam said. Nix glanced over to him, and he held up his finger. They weren’t in the clear just yet. “Where’s Cal and Jacobi?”
“I can go get them. What’s happening? Are you here because the lights went out?” He frowned. “Is Tre with you?”
