Warrant
C rossing my arms over my chest, I watched as Ainsley and Aella hugged.
The little girl was crying, which was fucking heart breaking.
It was obvious she’d grown close to Ains in their short time together.
Even my tough as nails sheriff had watery eyes as she said goodbye to the little girl.
Hell, she even got the often surly teenaged boy to give her a hug.
It was three days after the attack and everything was wrapped up with Jared and the lawyer. He’d get his inheritance and we hadn’t heard a peep from Christina.
Cynic, Torque, and Jury were heading to Austin with the guys and kids just in case they needed any help and to bring the SUV home.
Cypher had loaned them one of our cage rides so that the kids wouldn’t have to ride the whole way back on motorcycles.
They deserved a cushy ride and some AC. The Tucson guys were heading home as well.
“You going to actually give her space?” Demo asked as he stood next to me watching the farewell.
I snorted. “What does it look like I’m doing?”
“Pouting,” Scythe commented.
Scowling at him, I didn’t bother to correct him.
I was biding my time. She’d asked for space and fuck if I wasn’t trying to give it to her.
But it turned out patience wasn’t really my strong suit.
I was used to getting my own way. And if it wasn’t given to me right away I tended to bulldoze my way into it.
The others were chuckling at Scythe’s reply, but I ignored them.
A plan had been forming in my mind since my sheriff had walked out of my house.
She was trying to walk out of my life, but I wasn’t about to let that happen.
She clearly didn’t believe me when I told her she was mine.
Probably because those weren’t the words women wanted to hear.
I was pretty sure she would’ve bolted even quicker if I’d told her I loved her that morning.
But I did. She wasn’t going to believe me.
She didn’t seem to think a man could catch feelings that quickly.
Little did she know men usually knew within a month of dating a woman whether they wanted to make her their wife or not. We were decisive creatures.
“By the way,” Scythe said, “I noticed there were some cameras missing from inventory.”
“I thought you took those down and put them back?” Glitch asked.
“I did,” I told him. “Then I put them back up at her place. In different locations of course. I’m not stupid .”
They all stared at me. “I’m not leaving her unprotected when we know Christina knows where she lives.”
“You think she’s even still alive?” Pyre asked.
“Cypher told Butcher not to tell us either way,” Scythe replied. “Plausible deniability.”
We watched as our president spoke with the Austin and Tucson guys as they got ready to leave. We’d already said our goodbyes. The only reason they weren’t already on the road was because the kids insisted on saying goodbye to Ainsley.
They loaded up and my brothers started heading toward their bikes. “Aren’t you coming?” Rotor asked me.
“Nope. Go ahead without me.” They were going to escort our Arizona and Texas family out of town. But I had other plans.
I watched as they all took off down the road, and pulled out my phone. Ainsley had pretended not to notice me and had gone back inside.
“What are you up to?”
Glancing up, I nodded at Owen. “Nothing.”
He gave me a suspicious look. “Now I know that’s not true.
But I’m not going to dig because I really just don’t want to know.
” He let out a chuckle, slapped a hand on my shoulder, frowning when I winced.
That was the shoulder I’d been shot in, not that he knew that. “If you need anything, let me know.”
I waited until he’d gone back inside the station before I made my move. My phone screen showed Ains in her office. Now was my chance. I strolled over to the large gate at the side of the building and pulled out my lock picks.
“They really need to get better locks,” I said in a cheerful tone as I picked the lock that kept the gate shut. “Anyone could find their way in here otherwise.”
I pulled open the gate and left it while I walked to the back of the lot. “Hello, Beautiful,” I murmured as I slid my hand over the sleek surface of the Plymouth ‘Cuda I’d seen the first time Owen had brought me and Demo back here.
The door was unlocked but the cops weren’t dumb enough to leave the keys in the car. As carefully as I could, I broke away the paneling under the steering wheel and hot-wired the car. I’d get that fixed later. She roared to life and I smoothed my hands over the steering wheel.
Driving out of the lot, I got out and shut the gate behind me, leaving the open lock hanging off the fencing. I’d get Demo to bring me back for my motorcycle later.
I drove the car all around town before finally pulling up to my house. “And now we wait.”
It took three hours. But as soon as Beau raised his head off the floor, I knew my sheriff had come to find me.
“Warrant!”
Ah, the sweet sound of an angry siren.
Grinning, I shoved away from the table and walked out onto my porch. “This doesn’t seem like taking space, Sheriff.”
She glared at me, planting her hands on her hips. “You stole a car from the impound lot. What do you expect?”
This. This was exactly what I expected. And planned on. “You going to arrest me?”
“Will it make you appreciate the law?” she asked, sounding amused and irritated at the same time.
“Probably not. But it’ll make me appreciate those handcuffs.” I winked at her and didn’t take the fact that she rolled her eyes personally.
“Are you going to keep doing this?” she asked with a sigh.
“Doing what?” I asked, going down the steps toward her.
“Pulling this shit to get my attention?” she snapped.
“Baby Girl, do you know what kind of car that is?”
She frowned. “No. What does that matter?”
“Because it’s a really nice fucking car, and I wanted it.”
“You did this just for the car?” she asked, sounding skeptical.
Of course I didn’t. I could buy a car like that if I wanted one. In fact, I might. She drove like a dream. “Yup.”
“Then why are you getting closer to me?”
I reached out and grabbed a hold of her before she could retreat. “Didn’t even realize I was.”
“You’re so full of shit, Warrant. Let me-”
She didn’t get to finish the rest of her sentence because I was kissing her.
Hard. Pouring my emotions into my mouth as I fucked her with my tongue.
I didn’t know how else to show her what she meant to me.
And I couldn’t tell her. Not yet. It was the hottest kiss I had ever experienced, and I didn’t want it to end.
My lips were sliding over hers as my tongue plunged into her mouth and she met every movement, every stroke as I tried to claim her.
She was already mine, she just wasn’t willing to accept it yet.
I’d wanted to do this for days, and now that she was in my arms she wasn’t fighting it anymore.
I knew as soon as this ended she’d put that distance between us again.
Her gasp of outrage was like music to my ears as I broke the kiss and bent enough to catch my shoulder at her hips.
She was over my shoulder before she had a chance to run.
I wasn’t going to give her enough time to overanalyze the situation.
I stomped back up the porch steps and headed straight for my bedroom.
I felt her tense on my shoulder before she started hitting and kicking at me. “Put me down, you asshole.”
“Be nice or you'll find yourself in those handcuffs, Sheriff.” I could feel her trying to get some traction to slip off my shoulder, so I took her ass in hand to hold her steady. It wasn’t a hardship to grip those curves.
“You don’t get to just do whatever you want,” she huffed and tried to pull free again.
Wrong.
I wondered if she knew she was wrong as she said the words.
I always got what I wanted. She was lucky I’d given her three days of space.
For three days I had been thinking of nothing but her since she had walked away from me.
I wasn’t sure how to convince her to be with me, but this couldn’t hurt.
And even I could tell her struggles were half-hearted.
She wanted this as much as I did. She wouldn’t have kissed me back if she didn’t.
She’d left my house, gotten into her own truck, and drove off without another word.
I let her go, thinking I might have to let her go.
I’d rejected that thought about two minutes later.
Dropping her onto the bed, I covered her body with my own, my hands on her wrists where she was still hitting at me.
I chuckled as I caught both her wrists and held her hands in one of mine above her head.
I slid the other hand up into her hair, cupping the back of her head.
Her gray eyes were flashing fire, her hair tumbling down her shoulders and all I wanted to do was taste her.
To make her mine. “You want this. Admit it, Ainsley. I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind. ”
She narrowed her eyes and bit out the words. “Fine, I want this, but you can’t just-”
I cut off whatever she was saying. I couldn’t have her changing her mind again.
I crushed my mouth down against hers. This might be the last chance I had to convince her of how good we were together.
I needed her to forget about her honor and realize that what we had was more important.
She didn’t think she could have this and her job, but I knew I couldn’t give her up.
I let her lips go when we both were panting, my mouth moving along her neck to the sensitive place below her ear. I felt the shiver pass through her and couldn’t help my grin. “Tell me you’re mine,” I demanded, my tongue tasting along the skin I had missed so much.
She sighed, and her head fell to the side to give me more room to maneuver. “I can’t do that. I want this, but I just...can’t.”
