Only three years into our marriage and Rachelle has made it big time. Her restaurant just received a five-star review, and she was offered a television series where she’ll host new chefs eachweek.

She says she doesn’t have time for that, but I bet she figures out how to make time for it. I pull into our driveway at our huge cabin in Colorado and turn to look back at ourkids.

Rachelle and I went to the children’s home on our first year anniversary and found that little Sally and Toby Portis were available for adoption, so we adopted them. A year later we had a son. We named him Josh, and he’s a little over a year oldnow.

Our Dalmatian, Freckles, makes her way out to greet us as Toby and Sally pile out of the Suburban. They run to the dog we got a few days after we got married. Toby pats her head as Sally runs her hand over her back and they ask her if she missed them while we were gone to thestore.

I pull Josh out of his car seat then place him on the ground and he toddles away to join his brother and sister. Rachelle opens the front door and waves atme.

It’s really delicious. Come on, you have to try it.” She pulls at me to go inside the house where the kids are arguing over what cartoon towatch.

She pauses as she walks in front of the television, pulling me along after her. With a flick of the remote, she puts on their favorite cartoon which they all seem to forget is their favorite and they fall into a television zombie spell and sit on the sofa as they become mesmerized by thescreen.

Even little Josh sits on his haunches and seems to be dazed by the colors or the sound or a combination of them both. Rachelle pulls me along to the kitchen withher.

A cake is on the bar and I look over at it. She takes my face between her small hands and makes me look at her. “Not yet. I don’t want you to see that justyet.”

“Why? What are you hiding?”I ask as I wrap my arms around her and pull her tight to me. “You’ve been shady this whole last week. Did you take that television offer? Is this how you’re telling me that we’re about to have a film crew in here once a week or something likethat?”

She shakes her head and smiles but says nothing. Her eyes go soft and she runs her arms around my neck and kisses me. It’s sweet and light, but there’s more there. Her tongue runs languidly over mine and her pulse is strong and steady, but not fast like she’s particularlyexcited.
