Chapter Fifty-One

Mal:I just ended a call with Finnegan Gil. I’m . . . I’m not okay.

Cass:Did he fire you?

Mal:I wish that was it. We’ve been searching for our father.

Cass:Wasn’t he dead?

Mal:Last we heard he had been ran over a drunk driver, but he’s alive.

Cass:That’s good?

Mal:He’s Desmond Draven’s right hand. My father is working for them.

Cass:That doesn’t make sense.

Mal:Why not?

Cass:Their attacks seem too personal. If your father is his right hand, wouldn’t he be protecting you?

Mal:Ding, ding, ding. You just nailed it. My father hates us—remember when I told you he beat the shit out of us? He loved to torture us. Everything that’s happened so far is so on brand.

Cass:I’m searching and he did die in a car accident. Are you sure it’s him?

Mal:Yes. Gil thinks they staged his death, gave him a new identity.

Cass:That’s . . . wow. Are you telling your brothers?

Mal:Yep, they need to know. If he shows up, they have to be ready. I won’t mention it to Keir until he’s out of the center.

Cass:How long does he have left?

Mal:I don’t know. He’s been there for more than two months. Atlas is in charge. I’ll ask him so we can plan how to break the news to him. He’s going to be pissed.
