“Geology,” he said, which was the first thing that came to mind.
“Oh, that must be really hard, remembering all the names of different types of rocks.”
“It’s not that bad,” Luke said, trying to lighten the mood since this talk of science seemed to intimidate Tessa.“There are only three types of rock, really.Igneous, cretaceous, and...forgot the other one.”
“Yeah, right.I’m sure you remember them all.”For some reason, Tessa looked forlorn.
“We don’t have to talk about rocks.”
She blinked rapidly, trying to suppress some sort of emotion.“Sorry, it’s just that you’re so smart, Luke. You use all these words that I’ve never even heard of.What are you doing with me?”
“Don’t be silly—” he began.
“No, no, it’s better not to get involved,” she said regretfully.“You’re obviously out of my league.”
She left the table and quickly exited the bar, while Luke muttered, “I wasn’t going to ‘get involved.’”
It seemed he was doomed to fail where Texan women were concerned. He was glancing around looking for someone to give him the bill...
Then he saw her.
His so-called girlfriend, Hallie. She came out from the far corner of the establishment where she had been sitting in front of a slot machine.Oversized sunglasses covered most of her face. She was grinning like an evil monkey.
Chapter 21: Caught
Hallie knew about the“secret” date before it even happened.
Amber called her, saying that her friend Tessa was going to meet Luke, supposedly to discuss how she can get ahead in business.
So, this was his go-to move.Pretending it wasn’t a date when it clearly was. They were to meet at the Lonesome Cactus.Amber even told her the exact time.
She didn’t know she could count of Amber’s loyalty, but her old classmate was probably jealous that Luke had chosen Tessa instead of her, so she had a good motivation to ruin his date too.
Hallie arrived at the Cactus before them and concealed herself behind the slot machine, her face covered by bug-eyed shades.Soon enough, Luke arrived with his date.Hallie waited, biding her time and sipping an orange vodka cocktail.
She didn’t want to interrupt them and make a scandal. Then everyone would know her ‘boyfriend’ was trying to cheat on her.She had to be extra stealthy and quietly ruin their date in a way that no one would even realize.
