Chapter 61: Miss Santer Tattle Tales
Luke was in the middleof making plans for a weekend getaway when Miss Santer knocked on his half-open door.
He motioned her in while finishing up his phone call.
“I need you to find this horse,” Luke was saying into his phone.“I don’t care if there’s thousands of wild horses running around, this is the one I need.I have almost infinite financial resources, so use as many people as are required for the job.”
“All right, though it might take a while,” said the man on the other end, a famous horse wrangler Luke had hired.
“Ideally by this weekend.”
“That’s a tall order, Mister.”
“I know. There’s a bonus in it for you if you can do it.”
After ending the conversation, Luke looked up at Miss Santer, noticing that there was something even more serious about her manner this day.
“I have something to report,” she began, “which will probably not make you happy, but I feel I must bring it to your attention.”
“Okay,” he said, “You’ve got me in suspense...”
“It’s something I saw on the street last night, and it made me highly indignant,” she continued.
Luke shifted in his chair impatiently and threw a dart at the board.“As you Americans say, why don’t we get to the point?”
Miss Santer giggled, which seemed strange for her.“Ha ha, it’s so charming when you take on American customs.”
She had never been overtly flirty.Luke had feared that sooner or later that side of her would come out, and it would ruin her ‘repressed librarian’ vibe, which he very much enjoyed.
Dammit!Come to think of it, her hair was hanging down today, styled in glamorous waves.Usually, it was swept away into a tidy bun.He had feared this day would come.Miss Santer would decide to reveal her attraction to him, and lose all her dignity.
As she came closer, he caught a whiff of some kind of candy-scented perfume. This was definitely not her usual crisp eau-de-cologne.
“The point,” said Miss Santer, pulling out her phone, “is that I know you’ve been seeing Miss Mathews romantically, but she’s been cheating on you this whole time.”
“What are you talking about?”he scoffed.
Miss Santer showed him a photo of a couple in the middle of a kiss.He recognized Hallie, and it sent a shock through his body.
Of course, he had considered that she could be seeing other men.She had even told him herself. But seeing photographic proof of it was something different.
“When was this picture taken?”he asked.
“Last night. Now, I don’t want you to think I’m some kind of snoop.I happened to be there as I was leaving the Society for Women’s Advancement in Business meeting—”
“Yes, I don’t doubt it,” Luke said.“This is indeed a serious accusation, and I think Miss Mathews should be here to face the charges, so to speak.Could you ask her to come in here?”
“Of course.”Miss Santer gave him a cloyingly sweet smile that nearly turned his stomach.
She pranced out of the office, giving him a few moments to collect himself.
Was that image real, he wondered, or could Miss Santer have photoshopped it?Even if it wasn’t real, such things could happen since it was no secret that Hallie was seeing this other guy.
Only now did Luke realize how much he wanted her all to himself.
