Chapter Fifty-Two

BLAIR

Istroke my swollen stomach lovingly as Calix chops wood near the lake. I love watching him do this, especially when he’s shirtless.

Damn, he’s fine.

He wipes his brow, which isn’t that sweaty, and winks at me.

“How’s our son?”

“She’s fine,” I quip back, enjoying the banter over the gender of our child. We don’t care whether it’s a boy or girl, but we love playing games.

Especially cat and mouse, but I am too heavily pregnant to be chased around the woods.

Shame.

I push my foot onto the ground, and my chair rocks, instantly soothing my aching back. In the distance, I see Luna Willow hanging laundry, chatting to another woman holding a baby. Spring is in the air, and the lake glitters beneath the sun. My eyes close, and I drift off, a smile on my face.

My vision begins with me beside the lake; only I’m not pregnant—I’m holding a little boy’s hand. He looks strikingly like Calix, with raven black hair that rivals the darkest of nights, and his eyes are a navy to rival the deepest of oceans.

He’s frowning, and I want to know why.

“Why are you frowning?” I ask him, my voice almost musical.

“Because Daddy wants to kill the children,” the little boy responds flatly. “You can’t let him, Mommy. They haven’t done anything wrong.”

Pain stabs in my chest, and when he lifts a finger and points behind us, I twist to follow it.

We’re no longer at the lake; we’re at Alpha Asher’s packhouse, and Alpha Asher is staring at me like he’s seen a ghost.

“The children,” I blurt, watching as his brows furrow. “We need to save them.”

Alpha Asher tilts his head and points behind me.

I whirl around to see a farm filled with babies lazing on mats beneath the deep blue sky, and children playing with toys and each other. Happy giggles and excited breaths fill the air. They’re all beautiful, strikingly so, and I can’t help but smile.

I walk towards them, and they stop, watching me with their innocent curiosity, the toys clenched in their hands, their running paused momentarily.

Like they’re wary of me.

“Don’t be afraid!” I say, holding my hands out in front of me.

But they back away, clinging to one another before they start to whimper. The babies start to scream.

I stare at them, stunned. Why are they so afraid of me?

But then a little hand tugs on mine, and I look down to see my boy shaking his head.

“They’re not scared of you, Mommy.”

I follow his gaze behind me, expecting to see Alpha Asher, but instead, I see Calix.

And he’s holding a sword.

“Move out of the way, Blair.”

“Calix, no!” I look back at the children, at their desperate faces, the fear in their eyes. Something stirs within me, and I turn back to Calix with a fury I’ve never felt in my life. Not even with Faolan.

“You won’t touch these children,” I tell him as he frowns. “Unless you kill me first.”
