Chapter Twelve
BLAIR
Either he's insane, or I am. Something is wrong with one of us—because there's no way werewolves exist.
Yet, here I am, staring into the same golden eyes I saw Calix with only minutes earlier. Okay, these are more intense... but so were Calix's when we were attacked last night.
Oh, my God. This can't be real... there's no way Calix is a wolf, and not just any wolf, the wolf that comforted me when I was attacked by Billy and his friends.
My chest heaves, and I gasp for breath, panic taking over.
The wolf nuzzles against me, but I back away, feeling like I've been massively betrayed by this beautiful beast. It’s eyes follow me, and I choke on a sob, trying to come to terms with what's right in front of me.
A fucking wolf—that is also a human. A werewolf.
“I'm having a breakdown. Madness runs in my family; my Great Aunt Liza was committed to a mental institution in her twenties—that's what's happening to me. I need a doctor.”
The wolf sits back and licks its paws, clearly dismissing my words.
Is this really Calix?
The wind whistles through the trees, and I shiver despite the warm glow of the sun slowly rising. I can't take my eyes away from him, it—whatever you call these things.
Werewolves.
I jolt at the sound of Calix's voice in my head and let out a squeak of utter disbelief.
“Why can I hear you in my head?” I question, my voice trembling. “I'm losing it. Oh God, I'm really losing it.”
More tears sting my eyes, and fear crushes my chest. Who will take care of Leon if I'm carted off to a mental hospital? Because, let's face it, I clearly need to go.
You're not going crazy, Blair.
“I am, because I'm talking to a wolf in my head,” I hiss out, checking around us to make sure we're alone.
Of course we are. We're in the woods by the road at stupid o’clock in the morning. Who else is going to be here?
It's okay. Get back in the truck.
It's really happening. I can hear Calix in my head. Wait, if I can hear him in my head, can he read my mind?
Oh, fuck no.
Heat rises through my body, starting at the tips of my toes before making its way to my cheeks.
He can’t hear my thoughts, can he?
I can. But Blair, please get in the truck.
I stare at the wolf, or Calix, whatever the hell it is, and scramble to my feet.
He can hear me. I try to restrain my thoughts immediately, but all I can think of is how I need to escape this craziness.
Blair.
I’m going insane.
You’re not. This is an entirely normal reaction.
I glare at him, bunching my fists at my side. “Get out of my head!” I hiss as he backs away.
Sorry, it’s a habit.
He apologised. The dickhead actually apologised…
Calix growls, and I jump back.
“Out!” I demand, tapping my head.
How fucking dare he?!
My head throbs, and I feel nauseous, but the only person who knows why I feel this way is Calix, and right now, I need proof I'm not going insane.
“Change into a human.”
The wolf studies me, and I suck in a breath when I hear Calix in my head.
I'll be naked.
My cheeks flush like crazy, but I shrug.
“A wolf can't drive a car, right?”
“No.”
“Then change,” I whisper, wondering what the hell I'm doing.
He's not going to—my thoughts die in the cavity of my brain as the wolf before me stands on two legs, its fur retracting and smoothing out, the snout shortening, and the teeth shrinking.
Slowly, I see Calix, with his dark hair and glowing honey eyes, and as promised, his completely naked form.
Oh.
My.
God.
He's panting, and his body glistens with sweat. He's... beautiful.
And he's just changed from a wolf to a human before my very eyes.
“Holy fucking mother of God,” I whisper, dizziness taking over before darkness falls.
“She's tiny.”
“Humans are.”
“I know, but this one is really tiny.”
“Yes, Soren, this one is really tiny.”
“Is she going to have pups?”
“Soren!”
I shift my head toward the voices, slowly opening my eyes to see a woman staring down at me, and beside her, a white-haired teenager with wide violet eyes.
“Hey,” the woman greets me with a smile, sending a warning glance to the boy beside her. “I'm Vix, and this is my son, Soren.”
I push myself up onto my elbows and blink, staring around me with confusion. I'm in a large room with brushed white walls and a huge window overlooking a sparkling blue lake. Mountains dominate the backdrop, and there's nothing but trees around us.
“Where am I?”
Soren snorts, and Vix sends him from the room with a snarl. “Outside!”
Vix has luminous blue hair that cascades around her shoulders in huge waves, and her eyes are the same violet shade as her son’s. She places her hands on her hips and sighs, peering down at me.
I shrink back, and she laughs almost musically.
“You're a guest of the Moonlust Pack, sweetie.”
“Pack?” I echo, my eyes darting around us.
Vix purses her lips and then moves towards the door. “I'll get Alpha Calix for you.”
My brows knit at her words. “Alpha?”
Vix looks panicky and opens the door with one finger held up. “I'll be right back.”
“Wait!” I call out, but she's gone.
I stare at the view, wondering if I'm dreaming. I've never seen a lake this beautiful. It's so tranquil and still—
“Blair.” The rasp of Calix's voice sends shivers through me, and I have to admit I'm disappointed to see he's wearing clothes.
Although they're pretty sexy, as far as clothes go.
Grey jogging bottoms and a tight black top that clings to his upper torso, displaying his delicious body like a second skin. Holy fuck.
“How are you feeling?” Calix leans against the door, one leg bent and his arms crossed over his chest. His hair is wet, and honestly, I've never felt so turned on. I've got visions of him fucking me against that door—
“Blair, don’t.” Calix pushes from the door and stalks toward me, his glare burning me from the inside out. “I'm struggling enough as it is; don't think about me fucking you.”
As soon as he's close to me, my skin warms, and my pussy purrs like the slut she is. But I'm frozen, the reality of his words sinking in. Then I remember he can hear my thoughts, and a low moan leaves my lips.
“You're a werewolf,” I whisper, drawing my knees to my chest and resting my head on them, trying to block out the memories that are flooding back. “Why am I here?”
Calix moves back with a grunt, and instantly I feel cold again.
How the hell does he control my temperature?
“You're here because you need my protection,” Calix tells me for the millionth time.
“So you keep saying,” I whisper, lifting my head warily. “What are you protecting me from?”
Calix just stares at me, his dark glare penetrating my soul. I would never want to be on his bad side, but something about the way he's staring at me makes me flush.
“I don't know.”
“Why do you have to help me? You don't even know me,” I say, shaking my head. “You promised you'd explain things.”
Calix considers me, his jaw tense. “You're not going to like it.”
I swallow and shrug. “Tell me.”
“You're my mate.” Calix exhales like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders, and he looks at me with a mixture of apprehension and desire.
What the hell is a mate? What is he talking about?
“Like a soulmate?” I tilt my head, and he inhales sharply.
“Yes, very much like that.”
I nod slowly. We have an attraction to one another, but he doesn't know anything about me. It seems fantastical to me, and I tell him as much.
“You don't know me, and I'm very flattered, but you can't come to that conclusion just because you find me attractive.”
Calix snorts and shakes his head.
“It's not a choice, Blair. You're meant to be my mate. That's why I have to protect you.”
“Calix, of course you have a choice, as do I.”
“No, Blair.” Calix strides over to me, and my stomach flutters at the sudden proximity.
He leans over me, his biceps bulging as he cages me in once more.
I swallow and try to sit up, but he refuses to budge, meaning our faces are inches apart.
He inhales my scent and groans, his hand moving to my throat as he squeezes gently.
“You are mine, Blair, and you have no fucking choice in the matter. Do you understand?”
Oh fuck.
