Chapter Twenty-Nine

ONE WEEK LATER

CALIX

How the fuck can I find out who and what they are? I don’t know the first thing about them other than that they hate us and want every one of us dead.

Alpha Drox gazes at me. He’s thinking the same—I just know it.

“What the fuck are we going to do?” I grit out, unable to keep a rein on my patience. Things are escalating quickly, and I need to do something about it before more people get hurt.

My phone beeps, and I frown.

Who is messaging me on my phone?

A human, no doubt, and I can only think of one that would.

LEON: Where is my sister?

Ah, for fuck’s sake. I knew it wouldn’t be long until he piped up, but I guess he is Blair’s brother. I have to give him something, or he will probably go looking for her drunk and end up in a ditch without me babysitting him.

I text him back while Alpha Drox steeples his fingers.

CALIX: With me at my home. She’s fine.

I turn my phone over so it can’t distract me, and of course, I know Leon will reply, but I don’t have the mind space nor capacity to think about Leon.

“So, I’ve reached out to a few Alphas.” Alpha Drox raises his brows and makes a face that tells me he has already been told to get fucked. “Alpha Asher has agreed, however.”

This has my brows shooting to my hairline. ”Really?”

He’s the last Alpha I would have expected to come here. He’s too proud of his heritage and land to leave, surely.

“Losing Nina has made him fear for his pack, Calix.”

“I understand.”

And I do. I worry about my pack daily without the added threat of this fucking rogue pack hunting us down.

“They’re on their way.”

I nod, wondering how the fuck I’m going to coexist with Alpha Asher.

We’re both ticking bombs, but his rage is fresher and rawer than mine.

My need for revenge still curls through every cell in my body, and I won’t stop until I’ve tasted the blood of my enemies.

I want to feel the warmth dripping down my chin. But Alpha Asher?

He’s unhinged.

He also suspects everyone, which means he won’t trust easily, which causes more problems.

“Fucking hell,” I snap, dragging my hands through my hair. “I can’t believe we don’t know who they are. How does Lexie not know anything?” I direct this to Cox, who purses his lips.

“She’s a witch, not a Seer. She has no idea.”

I close my eyes. “We have two Seers right here, Cox, and even they don’t know what we’re dealing with.”

“Actually,” Luna Marie says from the doorway, her face pale. “We do.”

BLAIR

The icy wind blows against my warm skin, and I try to let it soothe me. But I can’t, not when all the wolves around me are irritated and scared.

“They can’t run at night,” I tell Luna Marie, who purses her lips.

“That’s not good for any wolf,” she replies with a sigh. “But I understand why Alpha Calix has put that security measure in place.”

I notice a gap in the trees and suck in a breath. I don’t dare walk in there, even with Luna Marie.

I’m so warm.

My fingers tingle, and I close my eyes, waiting for whatever is happening to me to pass, but it doesn’t.

“Blair?” Luna Marie asks, her voice filled with concern. “Blair?!”

She sounds so far away.

My ears ring, and my stomach churns, and fear grips my throat. Before I know what’s happening, I’m thrust into what I can only assume is another vision—

I’m in a dark room.

No, not a room; it’s too cold.

Am I outside?

I can barely see, even when I squint.

I reach out until my hands touch the ice-cold stone that seems to crumble beneath my fingers. I hear someone moan, and I try to concentrate like Luna Marie told me.

It’s a vision. I can’t be hurt by a vision, no matter how scary it is.

This gives me the confidence to walk forward, craning my neck for any sign of life.

It’s dark, but I’m starting to make out shapes in the darkness, and there are so many. Huddled together, crying and moaning.

“We have to stay strong!” A woman rasps.

Her voice sounds tired and faint, like she’s been screaming for years and years.

“Our Alphas will come for us!”

“When?” a younger voice asks, emotion clogging her throat.

My heart lurches.

These are women, the women kidnapped from the packs.

My breath refuses to leave my chest, and I gasp, trying to breathe.

“I don’t know,” the raspy voice says. “But we won’t ever give up. Even if they kill us—”

“They’ll never kill us,” the young woman sobs. “The Goddess won’t be that kind.”

“The Goddess?” Another woman hisses. “There’s no Goddess; what Goddess would allow me to get pregnant twice for these vile creatures?”

Oh no.

“I’m telling you; someone will come.” The raspy voice sounds convinced.

“It’s been years, Luna Willow,” another voice says softly. “Maybe we should accept our fates.”

Luna Willow? Who is that?

I listen so hard I barely breathe in case I miss anything.

“Your baby is due soon; please keep calm,” the raspy voice/Luna Willow cautions.

“It’s not my child,” the soft voice says. “It’s theirs.”

Someone cries, and then more women join in.

Light floods the darkness suddenly, so bright I have to protect my eyes. I peek out and see we’re in a cave, and standing at the mouth of it are three men.

Despite the light, I can’t see their faces, but I don’t stop trying. One is tall and looks burned.

The others I can’t see at all.

“Ladies,” the tall one says with a dirty smirk I want to claw from his face.

I feel such hatred for this man, knowing I’ve seen him before. The one that threatened his men was going to impregnate me. Then his eyes move to mine, and I don’t move.

“Oh look, the baby Seer is spying on us.”

I close my eyes and feel the rush of air, my fear twisting out of control until I come to on the ground by the woods, heaving so hard I can’t breathe. Acid burns my throat as I sob, despair owning my body and mind.

Luna Marie strokes my hair and murmurs words of comfort until I open my eyes, turning to her as she looks at me through wild eyes.

“They’re impregnating them. The women.”

Luna Marie claps her hand to her mouth in horror. “No…”

“They’re being kept in a cave,” I say, praying I remember everything. “There are three of them, and one woman is pregnant.” I sob, trying to ignore her voice in my head.

Luna Marie nods and pulls me to my feet, handing me a tissue from her robes. “Here, wipe your mouth. Are you able to walk back?”

I nod, but she still supports me, half striding, half dragging me back to the packhouse before helping me into a chair on the porch.

I’m exhausted.

I close my eyes as my body throbs against the chair’s fabric, my hands curling on the armrests as I wonder why I have this… ability. I don’t want to see women being tortured or held against their will.

Luna Marie heads inside, leaving behind the scent of her floral perfume.

Seconds later, my eyes fly open, sensing someone above me.

Calix looms over me, his eyes searching mine.

“Blair,” he whispers as I suddenly remember what I forgot.

“Luna Willow!”

Calix pales and stares at me, wobbling on his feet as Alpha Drox, Luna Marie, and Cox stare at me like they’ve seen a ghost.

“What?” Calix croaks out, his eyes filling with hope and fury, a deadly combination.

“One woman was called Luna Willow,” I explain, licking my dry lips.

Calix bows his head, resting it on my lap as my fingers move to his hair, touching it gingerly like he might leap to his feet at any time.

“Do we know which pack she’s from?” I ask, stroking Calix’s hair softly. He’s trembling beneath me—he must know her. I swallow as he lifts his head, his eyes filled with a rage that makes me retreat further into the chair.

“This one,” he rasps, his voice barely audible.

I gasp, and my hand flies to my mouth, but before I can ask who she is, my mind makes the link.

Luna.

Of this pack...

My eyes lock onto his, and he nods grimly.

“My mother.”
