Chapter Two
CALIX
ONE MONTH LATER
Istare at her house for hours, not feeling the freezing temperature. I’ve tried to leave countless times, but whenever I do, I just come back. So I’ve taken to camping in the woods opposite her house, watching her like some kind of stalker.
She’s in her room, the top left window of the house.
Her brother is in the living room, drinking beer and watching TV.
She’s reading a book, curled up in the window seat, her glasses sliding down her nose every few minutes.
She pushes them up without taking her eyes off the book, and I notice her biting her lip, her cheeks flushing as she quickly turns the page.
I wish her window was open; I want to smell her.
She wriggles on the seat, rolling her head to the side as she inhales whatever is on the page.
Blair.
I love her name. Even saying it soothes me, and my wolf agrees. He’s calmer when I’m here, but he wants more. He needs her touch.
Damn, we both do.
But no, I was an asshole when I first met her.
I couldn’t help it—she blindsided me that night. Her brother is a drunk, but he’s a decent guy. Everyone knows he lost his parents in an ‘animal attack,’ but I know better.
We’re still on our guard for that pack, should they ever return.
So, yeah, I know Leon.
But Blair, not so much.
My chest squeezes when Blair gets up and moves away from the window, out of my sight.
That won’t do.
I climb the tree beside me and shove my hair from my eyes, squinting through the rain out of habit more than necessity. I have to blend in with humans regularly, so I’ve mastered things like this.
That and squinting in the sunlight.
Ha.
My vision doesn’t need any assistance from me—even now, I can see everything in Blair’s room.
And what I can see takes my breath away.
She’s cross-legged on the bed, her fingers in her panties as she holds the book in one hand, her eyes eagerly scanning the page as she works her clit.
Fucking hell.
A growl leaves my throat, and I tighten my grip on the tree, the bark tearing into my hands.
I can only imagine her arousal, what it smells like.
What it would taste like.
Heat floods my dick, and I reach down, gripping it through my pants.
Am I going to do this?
Jerk off in a tree to a girl fucking herself?
Yes. Yes, I am.
My strokes are fast and hard, and spit leaves my mouth as I grunt my pleasure.
Blair’s mouth opens, and she must moan, a silent moan I can’t hear through the glass.
Her eyes are half open as she rides the wave of her orgasm, and I hiss out her name as I cum into my hand, the hot, sticky liquid coating my skin.
I stare at her, and for a second, she stares back.
She jumps, yanking her hand out of her pants as she runs to the window, yanking the curtains shut.
“Fuck,” I mutter, cleaning my hand on my pants before climbing down. I hit the wet soil and exhale, still trembling from what we just did.
I look up to see her peeking through the curtains, her eyes wide as she sees me crouched on the ground.
I hold her gaze until my brother’s voice sounds in my head through the mind-link.
Calix, come home. Father got hurt.
It’s all I need to hear.
With one last glance in Blair’s direction, I take off into the woods, shifting into my wolf form to cover more ground.
Thoughts of my father being hurt ricochet through my brain as I curse myself for being away.
What happened? I ask via mind-link, relieved to see the packhouse in the distance.
Someone attacked us. Rebel replies.
We chased them away, but…
Rebel is my younger brother and best friend.
I’m nearly there. I snarl back, doubling my speed. Tell him to hold on.
Rebel howls, and I don’t need the mind-link to hear it.
My soul drops into my stomach as I sense my father’s passing, and I stop in my tracks, screaming my grief along with my brother.
Calix… Rebel sobs, and I move forward, adrenaline pushing me onwards.
I’m here! I rasp as I stalk into the pack ground, taking in the disarray and destruction.
Wolves lie in pools of blood, with women and children crying beside them, howling out the names of their lost ones.
My wolf howls again, and my heart breaks as I head to the packhouse, where I see Rebel on the ground, injured.
Suddenly I can’t breathe, and my ears ring, blocking out the sound of screams from all around me.
“Rebel!” I roar after shifting into my human form.
“Who did this?” I demand, leaning over and trying to stem the blood flow. Deep claw marks decorate his stomach with crimson, and I vow that whoever attacked my family will die.
I’ll hunt them down, and I’ll kill them all.
One by one.
“Rogues…” Rebel gasps as thick dark liquid leaves his mouth.
“Rebel,” I growl, gripping his face. “Fight, do you hear me? Don’t you dare die.”
Rebel’s gaze locks with mine, and I swallow back tears and emotion, refusing to accept my little brother is dying.
There’s no way—everyone was okay earlier…
Someone falls to their knees beside me, and I see Rebel’s best friend, Cox, shaking his head, his nose bloody.
“Rebel, man, come on…”
But it’s too late.
Rebel is slipping away.
“I love you,” I say, stroking his face. “I’ll kill them all, I swear.”
Rebel’s eyes hold mine until the life fades from them, and Cox loses his shit beside me.
I rise to my feet and turn to see everyone looking at me for help now that their Alpha is dead.
My father and my brother were both taken from me in one night.
“My mother?” I ask no one in particular.
“They took her,” a girl to my right answers, her dress ripped and body bruised and bloody.
Fury spills into my veins as she turns her head, showing her throat has been slashed savagely.
“Rosa,” I whisper, a lump in my throat.
She’s eighteen. She was due to find her mate at the pack’s ceremony next week.
Now she won’t see another dawn.
“Anyone who can help the injured, do it now,” I roar, storming into the packhouse to face my worst fears.
Blood is sprayed over the walls, and my bare feet are wet. My chest tightens to the point of agony, and I thump it, refusing to give up now.
I’m all that’s left.
My father has been mutilated and hung around his bedroom. I fall to my feet, weeping and howling as I try to absorb what’s happened.
Someone murdered my family and took my mother.
And they’re going to fucking pay.
