Page 111 of Tethered Souls
Not like Micha could destroy me… A one woman army.
“They’re planning to establish an organized task force,” he says, pulling me out of my thoughts. My fears.
“Aleric owns half the police.”
“But not all of them.”
My eyes narrow. A human task force hunting sups? That would be enough to call the attention of the Special Crimes Unit, and unlike the WALL, the SCUdoeshave the means to take us down. They might be mere humans, but they’re a division of the Elv’ve’Nor, which polices the entire Seven Planes. They have a whole bunch of toys that hurt like hel.
“Who relayed the intel?” I ask.
“No one. I’ve recently taken an interest in politics.”
I raise a brow, but he doesn’t answer the silent question.
“Get some rest, Vay, Vay,” he says as he stands and pats my shoulder. “And stop being an idiot and fucking claim her already. She’s good for you.”
He leaves me on the front porch, nursing the weight of his words.
She’s good for me...
Unless she really is planning on betraying me.
Because I might have been avoiding her for nearly two weeks, but she hasn’t exactly been seeking me out either. And I can only wonder why...
My fists clench as ice-cold anger fills my veins.
Don’t do it, Micha.
Please just fucking don’t.
I’ll give you everything if you just make me your world.
Thirty-Nine
HIM
Talon rocks up a few hours later. I’m still on the fucking porch looking at the damn flowers, hoping Micha doesn’t fall for the trap I’ve left in my office. My gaze lifts to him as he steps out of his car.
“Got him!” he shouts.
I’m on my feet in an instant, my paranoia mixing with my pleasure. “Why didn’t you call?”
“Phone’s dead. Think I broke the charging port.”
I stare at him for a second, then turn to yank open the door of the house. “Everyone in the kitchen!” I yell. They’re all light sleepers, but they’re not all here.
Maddox hasn’t come back yet. He’ll need time to regain his strength after shapeshifting back into his normal size, but I know he won’t have taken a nap like he normally does. Given he’s been an ant on the wall during Talon’s sessions with Rei, he’ll know it’s time to strike against the wolves. He’ll be back in an hour tops.
Leno and Krypto are currently out too. They’re up north cementing our deal with Stefaan. Enoch and Ezriel are with them, acting as bodyguards.
I stride inside and enter the kitchen just as Khalid and Rudy come in from the direction of the stairs. Talon enters behind me. Mother and Micha are already inside, making us something to eat. Despite everything in me calling to her, I refuse to look at Micha. I’m stronger than my weakness.
I fucking need to be.
“Fill us in, T,” I sign as I stop beside the table. I don’t sit, my body too restless with finally having a lead a follow. An action to take so we’re not just sitting ducks in this fucking war.
“Cid’s heading up to North Carolina tonight for three days.”
