Page 18 of Stat: Love In Scrubs
W e pulled into my driveway. I reached for the handle to let myself out of the car, and Doc cleared his throat.
I glanced over my shoulder with a smile, already knowing what he was talking about.
I raised my hands in a surrender motion as he slipped from the driver’s seat.
I waited briefly for him to open my door.
I couldn’t help but smile, although it was a simple act. My dad’s words rang in my ears. “Baby girl, if a man opens doors for you, it’s not about the door—it’s about showing he respects you enough to put you first.” My dad drilled those words into me regularly once I started dating.
Doc opened the door for me, then reached out for my hand to help me out. I brushed against him with a smile as I walked up to my front door.
“Keep it up. I’m being a gentleman, but we know that can go out of the window quickly,” he said as I walked away.
I placed my key in the door, then glanced over my shoulder in his direction, and winked. I stepped inside and closed it behind me before jogging upstairs. I pulled my phone from my purse and called Darby, praying she would answer.
The phone rang a few times before she finally answered.
“Yes, I’m at the library, girl.”
I walked back out of my closet and gripped my hips.
“Why are you at the library? I’ve never seen you pick up a book once since I’ve known you.”
“Well, first, that’s a lie. You remember that field trip we went on in Mrs. Jaimee’s English class in the fifth grade? Yeah, we went then. Also, you’re not with me every second of the day. I go by the library sometimes?—”
“Yeah, you drive by it on your way to work. Now, why are you there?”
She groaned, and it sounded like she was going into a separate room by the clicking sound of a door.
“I’m here to meet a smart man. Is that okay with you? I read in a magazine this is where they are these days, and I need to find me a man that’s reading Anime and shit.”
I burst into laughter as I placed an outfit into my bag.
“You get on my nerves so bad. I’m not even going to comment on that. Good luck.”
“Whatever, now why are you calling me when you were supposed to be on a family outing with your new doctor boyfriend and his daughter?”
“Her name is Esa and he isn’t my boyfriend?—”
“Yet, you’re doing boyfriend and girlfriend shit. Save it for someone else, Yara. Not to mention, pops told me you invited him to one of your kickball games. I’m mad I missed that one!”
I grabbed my toothbrush and other necessary hygiene items to toss into the bag.
“Whatever. You and Dad need to stop gossiping about me. Anyway, He is waiting outside for me. I’m packing a bag and staying over. Do you think I should pack something sexy or go with no expectations?” I asked.
“Are you going over there to be fucked? Or…” she trailed off.
“You get on my nerves so bad. No, I’m not going over there to be fucked. Esa wanted me to come to their house and watch movies. But I figured I might as well stay over since it might be late by the time we finish. Not to mention, I’m not driving.”
“Yet, you’re calling me. Girl, please leave the lingerie. It only gets in the way, anyway, pack a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Now I can’t keep talking to you in this bathroom. I don’t want anyone to think I’m in here taking a shit.”
I laughed before we said our goodbyes. I swear I don’t know what I would do without her. I took her advice and packed an outfit for tomorrow, and a simple pair of shorts with a t-shirt for night clothes, then made my way back outside.
Doc was still standing outside, but he was leaning against the car.
I couldn’t help but openly admire the man in front of me.
His muscles seemed to be practically bursting from his sleeves.
The smoothness of his skin and freshly cut beard only added to his appeal.
Yeah, he is definitely getting some pussy.
The closer I got to him, the more he bit his lower lip, then bent down to whisper in my ear.
“I got something for that.”
I brushed my ass across the hardening of his dick as he opened my door.
I smiled over my shoulder and handed him my bag before slipping inside.
His heated glare spoke volumes as I leaned back into the passenger seat.
He walked to the back seat and placed my bag onto the seat beside Esa, who was now lightly sleeping.
When Doc got into the car, I figured he would say something else, but he didn’t.
He put on his seatbelt, then pulled out of the driveway.
Then, I turned on the radio and leaned over the middle console to grip my thigh.
The circles he was making only served to build a whirlpool between my thighs. He knew exactly what he was doing.
I brushed his hands from my thigh and crossed them. He chuckled and put his hand back on the steering wheel while the other stroked his chin.
“I can’t touch you now?” he asked.
I looked in his direction with a smile.
“You know why.”
He laughed and raised his hands to say, “Excuse me.”
Moments later “WE (Warm Embrace)” by Chris Brown played, so I sang along and he joined in. I looked over in his direction so fast because I didn’t know he was into Chris Brown, too.
“Let me find out you’re part of Team Breezy, too.”
He chuckled.
“I’m not saying all of that. But he is talented, and I fuck with a good portion of his songs. And what do you mean by that? I got a Breezy fan on my hands?”
“You'd better know it. It’s a lot of things and people I don’t play about, and Chris Brown is one of them.”
“I hear you. I’ll keep that in mind, but I hope one day I can become one of those people.”
“Who said you weren’t already?” I asked.
He nodded. “I like that. So, you're finally ready to admit you mine?”
I lifted a brow in his direction.
“I don’t recall being asked a damn thing, so there is nothing to admit,” I said, then crossed my arms across my chest.
“I agree. I thought my actions spoke loud enough, but that’s my mistake. I don’t spend this kind of time with someone I don’t see a future with. I want this to be me and you. You cool with being my future wife? I’m too grown for a girlfriend.”
“Sir, you’re not in your late fifties, and how do you figure we’re going to last past the girlfriend/boyfriend stage?” I asked.
“I can’t give you a drawn-out answer because it’s a gut feeling. It’s why when I ran into you again, I wasted no time getting to know you better. Our first meeting was unconventional, but it’s ours.”
I couldn’t find the words to say because in this moment, everything he said was right. I couldn’t find a single thing to critique or another question. I stayed quiet for a moment, and he didn’t push for an answer; he just allowed me to process.
“You don’t have to give me an answer now. I only wanted you to understand my intentions clearly.”
I looked at his side profile intently, then back out of the window. We pulled through the gate leading to his long driveway and soon his large home came into view. This was my first time here. If I ever wondered if he was a good doctor, his home gave me my answer. He was the damn best.
The moment he parked, Esa mumbled. It was as if an alarm went off in her head, telling her she was home. I glanced over my shoulder to see her stretch. Esa’s eyes lit up the moment she realized I was still in the car. It was as if she had never been asleep; I chuckled at the sight.
“Daddy! We’re having a big sleepover. I’m ready to get out now so I can show Ms. Yara my room and all my toys!”
Doc turned to face me with an apologetic smile.
But little did he know I lived for moments like this, or else I wouldn’t have opened the academy outside of the obvious.
I gave him a smile, hoping he understood it was fine.
I would play and do all the things his daughter wanted to do. But tonight, I would be all his.
“We’re going to have so much fun!”
Doc released Esa from the backseat, then grabbed my bag before leading us to the front door and allowing us to walk in before him. My mouth dropped at how warm and homely it was here. You could tell a woman had a hand in making his home what it was.
I walked further into the house, and it had an open floor plan, allowing you to see the large kitchen and living room from the front door.
A few of Esa’s toys were scattered around as if she had left them in a hurry.
I even liked the forest green and black color scheme with touches of brown.
It was masculine, yet it still felt like it had a touch of a woman.
I figured it was his late wife’s doing or his mother.
“This place is beautiful. Who helped you put it all together?” I asked.
“Damn, so I couldn’t have done this?” he asked, gripping his chest, pretending to be offended.
“Did you?” I countered with a smirk.
He laughed.
“Nah, my mom was all up and through here. I gave that woman my card, and she went to town. I learned that day that if I didn’t want to go into debt, I was going to need to just send her a couple of dollars to spend.”
My eyes widened. I honestly thought it was his late wife, but clearly, there was a lot I didn’t know.
“You thought Veronica decorated it, huh?” he questioned, with his hands clasped in front of him.
I nodded with a soft smile.
“I did. I can see all the feminine touches in here a woman knows.”
He walked over and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me flush against him, then placed a kiss against the length of my neck.
“I’m glad you like it. I hope you know this little girl is about to run you ragged,” he said, close to my ear.
“You'd better hope I have a little energy left for you,” I told him with a smile.
“I’m not concerned.”
Before I could respond, Esa was rushing over with a few of her toys in hand.
“Let’s go so I can show you my room,” Esa announced.
Doc cleared his throat and glared at Esa. “Now, is that how you approach an adult while they’re talking?” he asked.
