Page 46 of Rogue Mission
My stomach drops all the way. What does that mean?
A sharp whistle pierces the air.
“Move out!” It’s the guy who says he’s handling thepackage.”
“Am I the package, Justice?”
He hits some buttons on his watch, the dismissiveness of the motion shocking to me.
I’m breathing erratically when I speak: “I don’t know what happened while I was in that bathroom, but if it has to do with me, I deserve to know.”
“Your safety is the most important thing in this world. I’m going to ensure you stay safe with what I’m about to do.”
He steps back, lowering a baseball cap onto his head with a sharp motion, casting his eyes in complete shadow.
All the air leaves me when he turns and walks away, striding out the door, letting it slam in his wake.
EIGHTEEN
I’m ten feet from the Agile Security tactical truck when my phone rings.
“What?” I snap into the mic when the call connects.
I’m surprised there’s not a hole in my back; I can feel Beast’s eyes on my shoulder from the doorway to the warehouse.
“What the fuck, is what. Do not get in that truck,” he shouts.
Right.
“I’ve got to do something.”
He curses under his breath.
A second later a familiar sound comes through the line—a metal door being slammed.
“If you get in that truck, you’re fired.”
I screech to a halt, spinning to glare at him. So he wants to play like this…
The predator inside of me is roaring. Now fully awake and fighting to get out. It takes ungodly force to keep my muscles still.
When I don’t spot my boss’s angry mug coming at me like an furious, twisted Thomas the Train, I hit the button and reach for the door on the decked-out Toyota Tundra.
Only I’m shoved hard against the side panel.
Thud.
Big bastard sneak-attacked me.
“Asshole,” Beast grunts as he wraps a thick arm around my neck. The bicep and forearm are so big they pinch at my blood vessels and airway.
Being wrangled by Beast Calder is like being torqued by a fifteen-foot anaconda.
We’re a good match for grappling, normally. But I’m burning on the inside. Fueled by a need for vengeance.
“If you want to keep that arm, you should let go.”
He shakes me once, then shoves me away.
