“Still.”
“I’d walk into a room full of ninjas if Matt was with me.”
“He could’ve had a gun.” She swallows down more sickness.
“Well so does Matt and so do I.” He pauses, stroking his hands down her arms. “It was one dude, Ruby. I could tell by the scent.”
She hums her agreement. That’s what she had thought too when the scent hit her. But it was so virile, so violent. The thought of it makes her retch.
He watches her regain her composure, his face growing stern. “Your security is a joke. Why aren’t your people sorting this out?”
“They are.”
Matt motions towards them and she follows West down the path to the cops stood around their car.
“This is your house?” the cop asks her.
“Yes.”
“My partner is in there now. But it sounds like we might need to get the crime scene unit down here.”
Her eyes widen and she swings around to gape at West.
He glares at the cop, then takes her hands again. “It’s your nest, Ruby,” he says, his words obviously as gentle as he can make them. “He defiled your nest.”
The blood rushes to her head, and for a moment the world sways, Wests’ face drawing in and out of focus, his mouth moving, but the words distant and warped.
“Omega.” He shakes her and she blinks. He looks up at the cop. “She came home about forty minutes ago and as soon as she smelled the unfamiliar scent, she turned around and walked straight out. There isn’t much else she can tell you. It would be better if she answered any other questions later when she’s had some sleep.”
“I’ll need a contact number.”
“Matt?”
“I can sort that out.”
“Okay, I’m taking her home.” He tucks his hand under Ruby’s armpit, guiding her towards his car. “I’m taking you home,” he tells her as he helps her into the seat.
Chapter 17
“Idon’t think I can sleep,” she says, when he unlocks the door and ushers her through into his house.
“You want to watch a movie or something?”
She chews her lip, clearly thinking, and then nods.
“Come on, then, come choose your movie snack.”
“You have a selection?”
“I have a whole herd of nieces and nephews. I have all sorts of goodies. What do you like?”
“Just popcorn.”
He puts some on the stove to cook and then leads her though to the movie room. Her eyebrows rise when she sees the giant screen and all the sofas.
“Do you have somewhere more cosy?”
“The living room.” He walks her through and settles her on the sofa with a blanket and the remote control, then weaves his way back to the kitchen to fetch the popcorn, the snap of the popping corn audible from the hallway. The aroma of butter fills the air as he tosses the hot kernels into a bowl and fetches two cans of soda from the fridge.
