Odell

It was decided for us that the feast would be off until the following day once Little Meda and AJ could safely be returned home.

With Medwin in ‘nesting dragon’ mode the triplets didn’t put up any argument about taking up their old childhood rooms instead of going home to the guest house.

Even with the tension stretched taut between Teal and Indigo, all five of us piled into the same room in our borrowed pajamas.

For the first time in my life, I’d have killed for a moment alone to process but at the end of the day staying with Cobalt was the only thing that made me feel safe enough.

Guardie stretched out at the foot of the bed as if he’d lived in the room all his life.

“We have got to talk,” Indigo told Teal through gritted teeth.

“Not here,” Teal shrugged him off. “Some things are important enough to wait.”

“Until what? One of us or our pregnant mates get blown up?” Indigo hissed back at him and Cobalt slid in between his brother.

My heart skipped a beat and Guardie let out a warning growl.

I slid down to the bottom of the bed and ran my hand over his head, trying to keep him calm.

Cobalt could handle his brothers without my pup getting involved.

“Why do you assume that it’s about me?” Teal asked. “People buy land. Businesses buy land. It’s what they do.”

“Don’t make me say things here!” Indigo said. “Don’t make me into the asshole, Teal! Today didn’t have to happen! Today didn’t need to happen! We should all be stuffed with food and almost asleep at the apartment. Instead, we’re here and on guard and ready to---”

“Ready to what?” Teal shot back. “To turn this whole thing into a witch hunt? I get it! You’re stressed out. You’re more on guard than ever before but maybe you should take all that rage and go eat the fucking people who tried to blow us up! Normal people don’t try to blow people up!”

“How about we wait to talk about this?” Cobalt asked. “I’m not thrilled but unless you’re going to turn tail on him, Indi, we have to wait. Is that what you want to do?”

“Turn tail on everyone,” Teal muttered.

“What’s going on?” Ambry finally asked. “I don’t like being out of the loop. I can’t even decipher what you three are talking about over our mating link. If I’m going to get blown up, I’d at least like to know the reason behind it!”

“No one’s getting blown up!” Cade said, knocking on the door as he spoke.

The brothers all exchanged warning looks before Indigo ran a hand through his hair and turned to open the door for their sire.

“No one’s getting blown up,” Cade said again. “The last thing anyone needs is for you three to be at each other’s throats all night. If you can’t shut up and wind down, I’m going to separate you.”

I blinked. Could he do that?

“Your grandparents are in bed. Your carrier is trying to sleep. Dolores is snoring like a bear. You don’t have to go to sleep, but you can’t do this.

I don’t know what part of the last few weeks you’re on about but wait until you’re not at their home.

I love you three. Now stop acting like teenagers.

Just for tonight, let’s all get along. I’m sorry everything is raining on your parade – first your matingmoon and now your feast. We’ll get it worked out but not tonight. ”

“Sorry, Dad,” Teal was the first of the brothers to speak.

“It’s alright. Everyone’s wound up tight tonight. It’ll all look better after some sleep. Most things do,” he said and as soon as he was satisfied that the triplets were going to take the hint he left, pulling the door closed behind him.

“As soon as he’s asleep I’ll have to go out,” Teal said as soon as Cade’s footsteps disappeared down the corridor.

“What?” Indigo snapped, whisper-shouting the word so that Ambry climbed out of bed and stood beside him.

Cobalt glanced at me over his shoulder. Maybe it would be a good idea to take another room.

He wasn’t going to do that, but it wasn’t a bad idea.

I curled up around Guardie and hoped they’d work it out soon.

I was pregnant and we were almost blown up.

Arguing didn’t seem like the best use of our time.

“Change takes work,” Teal said. “The bigger the change the more work and risk it is.”

“How about you stay and help mitigate the risk you already took, huh? You think we don’t know what startup bought the damn place?” Indigo hissed and Cobalt slid back in between them.

“If you don’t stop it, I’m taking Odie and Ambry to my room. You can’t fight around pregnant people,” Cobalt said, looking back and forth between Teal and Indigo.

“You’re not taking my mate anywhere,” Indigo snapped.

“I will too,” Cobalt squared his shoulders. “This isn’t how this needs to go down. First and foremost, it’s about them and our kids. So, yes, I will take him to another room if you two are going to get into this right now.”

“I’m right here! Don’t talk about me like I’m a kid!” Ambry snapped.

“You can’t go sneaking around anymore!” Indigo hissed at Teal as he shoved Ambry behind him and away from Cobalt.

“You’re not the boss of me! Who died and left you in charge? Even if our parents and grandparents died in this instant you have no right to tell me what to do!” Teal said, his eyes shifting.

“Stop it!” I hissed and all of them turned to look at me. “Please, stop it. I might be in the dark but here’s the thing. I sort of get it. I’m probably not in the dark as much as you think. Neither is Ambry.”

“What do you mean?” Teal asked, his voice was gentler now that he wasn’t talking to his brothers.

“We all know what you’re trying to do. We get that you’re balancing becoming a folk hero with family honor.

If they’re mad that people want food, then they can shove their grenades up their asses.

Though, I think everyone would feel a lot better if you take tonight off and stay with us.

I can’t sleep if Cobalt doesn’t come to bed and he won’t unless he knows you’re going to stay here,” I said, tossing the words out quickly before anyone cut me off.

“Will it endanger anyone if you don’t go?” Ambry asked, swatting Indigo’s arm away and stepping up next to him again.

“Probably not. They’ll be worried about me, though,” Teal said.

“Call Crilus and tell him to let the right people know you’re okay,” Cobalt said.

“I’m not talking to Crilus because he went from sucking your dick to prove he could to wanting to marry me,” Teal rolled his eyes. “Seriously, not talking to him.”

“He’s in heat. He doesn’t want to marry you, not really,” Indigo laughed. “He wants you to dick him down like you’re going to spend forever doing it.”

“Eww…” I shook my head. “How about we stop this conversation too. If anyone’s getting dicked down, it’s one of us and I don’t want to imagine him –”

“Who else is there?” Ambry asked, trying to get the conversation back on track.

“Plenty of people but no one I’m going to call while I’m here,” Teal shook his head. “And now we don’t use the flight link for that sort of business.”

“Won’t they figure you’ll lay low with your family?” Indigo asked.

“Indigo, they’re my family too,” Teal frowned. “They’re as Moonscale as any of us are. They’re working on the same things that I am. We’re all---”

“Maybe it’s time to come clean to Grandpa. It’s starting to get serious.”

“I don’t know if people will support it the same if—” Teal sighed.

“When it’s not a secret club?” Cobalt arched a brow.

“They will. It’s not like we’re planning a coup,” Indigo cut in. “You’re not are you?”

“Of course not!” Teal said, his expression falling into a look I’d never seen him wear before.

“That you think I’d hurt our family --- Do you even know me?

I know you two are all wrapped up together and I’m off working but--- Are we even still us?

” He took a step toward the window and this time neither of them said anything.

“You are still you guys,” I said before he opened it up.

“They’re afraid,” I spoke without looking at the others.

Maybe this was a betrayal of my mate’s emotions, but I had to say something before everything fell apart.

“They’re afraid that something’s going to happen to someone they care about and that includes you.

They’re willing to tear down what you’re working on if it means keeping you safe. ”

“No one’s safe if anyone is struggling to make things okay,” Teal said.

“I agree. They agree too. Fear makes your head funny. Believe me because I’m the guy who would know.”

“How are you so calm about this?” Teal asked.

“I’m good when the world explodes. In a few days when the ashes settle down and I know an ember isn’t about to send something else up in a flame, I’ll probably melt down into messy emotional goo but for tonight, I’m good.

Now can we all go to bed? I’d like to have the feast we came here for and if you run off, I don’t think it’ll be tomorrow. ”

Teal nodded, closed the blinds and pulled his shirt off over his head.

Indigo gave him a one-armed hug, but Teal flopped down on a sofa on the other side of the room as if the last thing he wanted was to be touched by anyone here.

If the rumors were true, I’d do whatever I needed to ensure that Cobalt had Teal’s back when the time came.

“Don’t even think about it too loudly,” Teal grumbled from the sofa. “Even the walls have giant ears in this house.”

“We love you too,” Indigo said, crawling into bed behind Ambry.

A second later, Cobalt unbuttoned his shirt and crawled in with us.

Guardie sniffed his feet and then licked my toes as if giving his approval.

Cobalt wrapped his arm around my middle with his big, protective hand over my stomach and I patted around the dark bed until I found Ambry’s hand.

Someday soon Teal’s mate would be here too.

Then everyone would calm down. It wouldn’t feel like we were on such an uneven seesaw then but not even Guardie could hurry up time and make fate get off its lazy butt.

“I love you,” I murmured to the room and Cobalt kissed my cheek as I let sleep pull me under. Almost getting blown up was hard work.

Come morning, I woke with my head on the firm, muscular chest of an alpha.

Only, it wasn’t my alpha. It was Indigo.

His heartbeat whispered that he was still out cold as I blinked my eyes open.

How’d he get between me and Ambry? Where was Cobalt?

Where was my mate and why didn’t he tell me he was leaving?

A quick glance across the room at the empty sofa told me exactly where he’d ran off to. Irritation danced under my skin but I let it go. I shut my eyes and pretended sleep. Whatever dragged them off this time of morning better have been worth it.

“Shhh…” Indigo whispered in his sleep and kissed the top of my head. “Safe. You’re safe.”

I snuggled down against his side and tried not to worry about Cobalt and Teal too much. Only that was impossible. We were just starting our lives together. Why would he risk everything now? I wouldn’t survive losing another person.
