“Manual labor is different. I know. We used to work on a farm, mate,” I chuckled.

“Seriously, on a farm. Not that it matters. My grandparents have both been to war too. Hell, if you think it’s about money, I’ll give you a whole account to yourself and then if money means the power of choice, you have that power and whatever other power you want. ”

“I don’t want your money. I don’t think you’ll use it to manipulate me because I won’t let you,” Ambry said.

My gaze drifted down to his lips again and I might’ve kissed him if he didn’t smell so Frost-damned frustrated.

“You really hate money, huh?” I asked, unsure of how to word it.

“I hate what some people with money do.”

“Tell me who’s going hungry, and I’ll feed them,” I offered.

“Isn’t Teal already doing that?”

“So, no one’s going hungry tonight that we know of? Can I have a kiss then?”

“Give me your car keys,” he said, holding out his hand.

“Um…. Are you afraid I’ll runaway if you don’t kiss me?” I laughed, my fingers itching to sink off the curve of his hip and grab his ass.

“No, I’m going to go down and grab another test. I can navigate the steps with my eyes closed and I thought you guys were going to murder yourselves getting that basket up here,” he said.

“They’re in my pocket,” I said, locking my gaze to his.

“We’re really going to play that way?” his expression turned serious.

“I thought we were playing that way but…” I started reaching for my keys, but he knocked my hand out of the way, laughing.

“Don’t mess with me like that,” I said, moving away and tickling his side. “Make me think I’m turning into a creep!”

“How do you think I feel? You’re trying to run away from me putting my hand in your pocket!

” he laughed and tried again. The back of his hand brushed against my crotch and a smoke ring wafted out of my nose.

I brushed it away before it reached him but while I was distracted his lips found mine.

They were even softer than they looked. I might’ve melted into a pile of draconic molten metal when our tongues met but Ambry tried to slide his hand into my pocket while I was preoccupied.

I caught his hand and held it to his chest as our tongues danced between our mouths.

He rolled his hips rubbing his ass over my hard cock.

I could’ve kissed him forever but he pulled away.

“Test.”

“Keys,” I pointed to my pocket and let him steal them this time. “Let me show you how they work, though. I don’t want a broken wing.”

“Tests are in the basket. Sorry got distracted. Car is back, though,” Teal said, sounding a little breathless over our link.

“Are you back with Crilus?” I asked.

“No. Had to make a run for it. Don’t worry. Alls well. Tests in basket.”

“There are tests in the basket according to my missing brother,” I told Ambry as he glanced around for where he’d left his shoes during the chaos of our arrival. He sprinted into the kitchen before I had a chance to catch up and reappeared a moment later holding two boxes up.

“Let’s get pricked,” I teased him.

“I didn’t say we were going that far tonight. It wouldn’t be the first time Odie walked in on someone dicking me down but I’d like to give him some warning and what about your brother?”

“My brother would mind his own business,” I laughed and reached out for a box. “Are you afraid of needles?”

“Maybe. I don’t know. Does it hurt?”

“It doesn’t really hurt me but it makes those tiny little scales come up on my finger. My dragon doesn’t like being jabbed.”

“Yep. You said jabbed because you already know I’d make a joke if you said poked,” Ambry teased me, tearing his box open and spilling the contents out onto his lap.

“Words have power,” I said, gathering the stuff up from his lap and showing him how to put the test together. “It works sort of like a blood sugar test. Well, the jabbing part anyway.”

Ambry eyed the little lancet gadget and raised his eyebrows at me.

“Hold onto the strip and give me your hand,” I sighed, reaching out for it and swabbing his finger with the little sterile pad included in the box.

Once his hand was inside mine, I didn’t want to let go of it. His skin was soft and warm, and one glance was enough to make me want to kiss him again but forever this time. Who needed to breathe? Not me. I needed to drown in his warm, plump lips.

“Are you going to do it or not?” Ambry asked, breaking whatever spell touching him had on me.

“Just making sure you’re ready,” I said, taking the lancet in hand. “Keep looking at me.”

“I will but you look at my finger. I don’t want you to miss and hit something else,” Ambry laughed

“Don’t laugh! Laughing makes it hard to aim!”

“I’ll remember that,” he said as we both tried to stop laughing.

Eventually, we did, only to burst out laughing again when I lined up the lancet gadget with his finger. He squeaked when the needle caught him off guard. I held his hand steady as I smeared his blood across the strip and set it on the table to curate.

“This is the only time I want to smell your blood floating around,” I said, echoing my dragon’s unspoken thoughts. “It belongs inside your body.”

“Do you want me to do yours?” he asked around the finger he was sucking on.

“Okay,” I nodded and set up the other box.

This time we didn’t break out into laughter. He studied my finger intently as if trying to memorize my fingerprint before swabbing it with the alcohol wipe.

“See, it’s cold! That’s why I couldn’t quit laughing,” he pointed out.

“Not that cold.”

“Okay smoke-breather,” he rolled his eyes and I laughed.

“Don’t you start it!” he laughed too.

A second later, he hesitated twice and then finally pricked my finger. I barely had time to smear the blood on the strip before the scales popped up over the tiny prick mark.

“Shit, that was fast,” he said. “Really fast. I think he wants to keep your blood inside. I’m not a vampire,” he said, leaning down to talk to my stomach as if that’s where my dragon lived.

A few moments later both strips lit up green, meaning that we were good to go.
