Page 89 of Obsessing Over His Favorite
She could see the shock in his eyes. He hadn't expected this.
Her chest rose and fell in sharp, uneven breaths. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, then opened again, shaking. The ache inside her chest tightened so sharply it nearly stole her breath. A painful lump rose in her throat, nausea curling in her stomach.
And then her knees gave out.
The world spun around her, lights dimming. A loud ringing echoed in her ears. Her arms went limp. Her body went limp.
Before she could hit the hard ground, Lucas lunged forward and caught her just in time, sweeping her into his arms with panic flooding his expression.
“Emily!” Lucas called out, panic surging in his voice. “Emily?!”
But she didn’t respond. She had already lost consciousness.
Without wasting another second, he carried her to the car. “Drive to the hospital. Now,” he barked at the driver.
The driver jumped into motion and sped down the road as Lucas cradled her tightly in the back seat, his jaw clenched, eyes scanning her face every second.
By the time they reached the hospital, he was nearly frantic. The staff rushed to meet them. Lucas placed her gently on the stretcher, his hands hovering near her face, brushing hair away from her pale skin.
“She has a blood clot in her head,” Lucas told the doctors urgently. “She fainted suddenly. Could it be connected? You need to check right now—she’s had issues before.”
The panic in his voice and the wild look in his eyes made it clear he was losing his mind.
The medical team wheeled her away for scans and tests. Lucas paced the hallway like a storm trapped in a corridor, checking his watch every thirty seconds, staring at the ICU doors, cursing under his breath.
An hour later, a nurse directed him to a private VIP patient room. Lucas burst through the door—only to stop short when he saw her.
Emily was sitting upright on the hospital bed, the pale sheets tucked around her waist.
The doctor stood nearby, arms loosely folded, and gave Lucas a calm nod. “It’s alright, Mr. Cantrell. Miss Emily fainted due to stress. Nothing serious. She’s stable now.”
Lucas’s jaw clenched. His fists curled at his sides. “How can she be fine?” he barked. “She collapsed out of nowhere! This isn’tjust stress! What if the blood clot’s gotten worse? Have you even done a scan yet?”
“I’m fine,” Emily interrupted, her voice firm. She looked at the doctor. “Please leave. I’m alright.”
The doctor nodded and quietly excused himself, but Lucas didn’t move an inch. His shoulders remained tense.
“How can you be fine?” he asked again, this time softer—his voice cracked slightly, and his brows drew together. He stepped closer, one hand reaching for the rail of the bed. “I saw you collapse. You need more tests. I’ll call a brain specialist. Maybe fly in a surgeon—”
“I told you I’m fine!” Emily suddenly snapped, her voice sharp and furious. “Don’t you fucking understand?”
Lucas froze, mouth frozen mid-sentence.
She took a deep breath, calming the storm in her chest. Then her voice dropped, flat and quiet. “I remember everything.”
He blinked. “You… remember?” His face lit up as he stepped forward. “Everything? That’s amazing! That’s great!” He reached out to hug her. “You remember us?”
But she stopped him cold. Her hands pressed hard against his chest, shoving him back.
“Don’t touch me,” she said, voice low, clipped, and lethal.
He froze, arms suspended midair, then dropped limply to his sides.
“You can leave now.” Her chin lifted with defiance, though her hands clenched tightly at her sides. “We’re done. This relationship is over. I don’t want you anymore.”
Lucas stared at her in stunned silence. His world tilted. His entire body went rigid, frozen.
And the way she looked at him—it wasn’t anger. It wasn’t pain.
