“I’m sorry too.”
I take his other hand in mine and kneel at his feet. “Fitz McIntyre, will you do me the honour of being my husband?”
Fitz stares at me. “You-you’re serious?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not mucking around right now?”
“Not at all.” I stroke my thumbs over his knuckles. “I love you. Marry me? Please?” I kiss his hands. “We could make our trip to Japan our honeymoon.”
Fitz sucks in a breath. “Addy…”
My heart thuds wildly. Is he going to say no? Should I do a U-turn and pretend Iwasmaking a joke?
For once, he has to lean down to kiss me. “What flavour wedding cake do you want?”
“Is that a yes?”
“Yes.” He kisses me softly.
I wrap my arms around him, stand, and spin him around until he shrieks with laughter. “Chocolate orange,” I decide. “Or maybe white chocolate and raspberry. Or pink champagne or…fuck it. We’ll need about fifty tiers so we can enjoy every flavour of cake you’ve ever made.”
“I don’t know fifty flavours of cake!”
“Really?” I purse my lips and then shrug. “You’ve got a year to come up with however many new flavours it’ll take to make a fifty-tier cake.”
Fitz laughs. “It would fall over.”
“The leaning tower of wedding cake?”
“More like the splattered-all-over wedding cake. We’ll havefourtiers.”
“Four?” I pout and give him puppy eyes.
“Yes,four. You’ve got a year to decide your four favourite flavours.”
“You’re a tease.”
“I know. But you still love me.”
I hug him close and nuzzle his neck. “Yes, I do,” I whisper. “I really, truly do.”
Chapter18
Fitz
“I have cake,” I announce as I walk in the front door.
Addy, who is in the middle of watering our houseplants, stops and stares at me. “You always bring cake home.”
“I know, but this isspecialcake.”
Addy narrows his eyes. “What’s so special about it?”
I flash him a grin. “You’ll find out.”
I put the cakes on the table and take my coat and shoes off. It’s getting warmer but wetter now that it’s almost the end of March, so I’ve switched my duffle coat for a lighter raincoat. At least I won’t get any more jokes about looking like Paddington Bear. When I’m done, I stand at the table, drumming my fingers while Addy finishes watering the plants. I don’t know how he has the patience to do that instead of coming over here to find out why the cakes are special. I’m desperate to show them to him.
