I slap my hand to my forehead. “We’re not getting married.”
“Who’s getting married?” Dad asks.
The private function room is filling up now.
“Adrian and Fitz,” Mum says.
“No, we’re not.”
“About time,” Dad says. “I love the cake, Fitz. You did make it, didn’t you?”
Fitz nods.
“I can’t wait to try a piece. Do you think you’ll make your wedding cake?”
“We’re not…” Fitz says, but he trails off as the rest of his family puts in an appearance. Stephen and Sophie’s daughter, Tilly, starts to run around so she can give everyone hugs and sloppy three-year-old kisses.
“Fruitcake?” Dad continues. “Wedding cake has to be fruitcake.”
“I don’t…” Fitz begins.
“I didn’t know you made wedding cakes?” Drew, Fitz’s dad, says.
“I don’t.”
“He’ll be making their wedding cake, though,” Dad says, pointing to our clasped hands.
“Really?” Drew’s eyes widen. “How soon do I need to dust off my suit?”
“We’re not—” Fitz begins again.
“Maybe a spring wedding?” Hallie suggests. “It’s your favourite time of year, isn’t it, Adrian?”
“Umm, yes.”
“I madeyoua cake,” Fitz says, gesturing to the anniversary cake.
“It’s gorgeous,” Hallie says.
“You’ve done a grand job,” Drew adds. “You’ll need a few more tiers for a wedding cake, though. Do you think you could do a layer of sponge or chocolate cake?” He rubs his stomach. “You know fruitcake doesn’t agree with me.”
Fitz leans against my arm and shrugs.
“Maybe you could have a double wedding with Blair and Ana?” Hallie suggests.
“Wait. What?” Blair asks.
“We’re not getting married,” Ana says.
“Shame,” Hallie says. “Oh well, a double wedding would be harder to plan. Where are you boys thinking of getting married?”
“In a galaxy far, far away,” I whisper into Fitz’s ear, which makes him laugh. In a louder voice, I say, “We haven’t thought about it because—”
“You really should,” Mum says. “You know the nicest venues get booked upyearsin advance.”
“You’ll want somewhere with nice gardens,” Hallie says. “For the photos afterwards.”
“And good food,” Joe adds, which earns him a shoulder to the ribs from Max. “What? The reception is just as important as the ceremony. The food has to be good.”
