Shaking my head, I laughed to myself. “Oh,mi amor, of course I would.”
He opened his mouth to spit other insults at me, but the back of my hand connected with the side of his face before he could.
“Now, what makes you think it’s okay to insult a woman?” I glanced over my shoulder, winking at my guest. “I think he needs another lesson,no?”
He followed my gaze, frustration clear on his features since he was unable to discern who I was talking to.
“I’ll have to agree,” they finally said.
Shock froze over his features, the familiarity of the voice washing over him as she stood next to me and finally revealed herself. His body stiffened, his mouth hanging open.
He whispered her name, disbelief coating his voice. “Elena?”
He closed his eyes, shaking forcefully, his head trying to dismantle the ghost he was convinced he was seeing. “It can’t be you. It’s impossible.”
His eyes flickered back and forth between both of us.
“Surprise!” She let out a small chuckle. “Happy to see me,esposo?”
CHAPTER33
SOFIA - FIFTEEN MONTHS EARLIER
Imade my way past the edge of Bemes, heading straight for Adrar. Once in their neighborhood, I parked my car where no one would pay much attention to it. Turning the ignition off, I unlocked my tablet and pulled up the security footage from Morales’s summer house.
As expected, two guards were outside on the porch playing cards while his wife was in the living room, sitting on the couch, book in hand.
I glanced at the time. There were still several hours before nightfall, so I patiently waited for the dashboard clock to tick over into the new day.
It was five past midnight when Valentina’s call rang through the car.
I stuck my Bluetooth in my ear and slipped out of my car, tablet in hand. I placed it on the roof while I grabbed my tools from the trunk.
“Valentina,” I greeted her.
“Two guards are stationed in the kitchen. No other movement on the premises. Elena’s fast asleep in the bedroom.”
“You have a clear shot?”
“Yes.”
“Take it.”
I watched the footage in time to see the two men fall over each other, without a sound or a fuss.
“Targets eliminated,” she said through the intercom.
“You’ve got the body?”
“Yes, it’ll be set up in the living room before you get there.”
I paused, anticipation of finally being able to get this started coursing through my veins.
“Thank you.”
She hummed before cutting our communication. Strapping my Glock against my thigh, I shouldered my backpack and made my way down the beach, running the short distance between my car and the house.
I had met Elena Morales three months ago in a public bathroom of the country club she frequented weekly for a luncheon with the wives of her husband’s circle. As soon as she left to use the restroom, I followed behind and made sure no one would be coming in.
