Thunder boomed again, a flash of light illuminating the darkening forest for a fraction of a second behind him as he pulled away.

I looked up at him, his dark wet hair falling in front of his eyes. The longer I stared at him, the more my emotions became heightened by the silence around us, only the pelting rain and our harsh breaths breaking the silence.

My stomach flipped, the fear of losing him creeping in, mixing with the pain already present. I wasn’t willing to lose him all over again.

All I had left was to pray that the rain would wash away my lies and allow us to have a clean slate.

CHAPTER40

THEO

It was taking everything in me not to return her kiss, to drown myself in her and pull her lips into mine. My emotions were waging an internal battle within myself. The want to let her back in fiercely competing with the fear she’d leave me again.

“Theo?” she questioned, her bottom lip trembling at my silence, tears falling down her cheek and slipping through my fingers.

She looked up at me through her lashes. “Let me remind you that I’m yours. That I’ve always been yours.”

My eyes searched hers as I towered over her, the vulnerability and remorse clear in her expression. Reaching out, I gently cupped her face and bent down, swiping her tears away.

“Please don’t cry,mi alma. I’m sorry for failing you. I’m sorry for not coming to you sooner. I was devastated when you left, but I was more angry at myself for not being there when you needed me.”

She closed her eyes, leaning into my touch.

“Mi cielito…” her words trailed off as I brushed my lips against hers, a whispered touch that ignited a fire in my veins.

“Promise me something?”

“Anything.”

“No more leaving.”

Her tears fell harder as her hands came up to rest above mine. “No more leaving.”

When I arrived a few minutes before she did, I had already started to regret coming and was about to pack to go to her when she showed up, completely derailing my plans.

I still couldn't believe she came for me. For most of my life, I’d felt undeserving of the kind of love she offered me

I kissed her. I kissed her because I had to. I kissed her because I wanted to. Because Ineededto come home.

She parted her mouth on a soft sigh, her hands clutching my wet shirt as she melted into me.

My hands were still cupping her jaw as our lips tangled with each other. My hands then moved down, and I wrapped one around her lower back, pulling her tighter against me, while the other found its place at the side of her neck.

I groaned as my tongue delved into her mouth, kissing her harder. My thumb instinctively drew circles against her pulse point, assuring myself that she was real. That she was really here.

A tiny whimper broke from her chest from what felt like relief, her body arching into me, our bodies starved for each other.

I pulled back to breathe and laid my forehead against hers, memorizing this moment in any way, shape, or form that I could, needing to hear those words again to make sure I wasn’t dreaming the first time she’d said them.

“Say it again,” I said against her lips, my voice deep and strained.

As the wordste amocame out, I locked my gaze with hers and whispered the words I’d been dying to tell since I first laid eyes on her seven years ago.

“Te amo, Sofia. Siempre te he amado. I first fell in love with you when we fought over who was the better cook and I’ve loved you ever since.”

I wrapped my arms around her and hauled her off her feet, pinning her to my chest, the wet fabric of our shirts clinging together.

Her legs wrapped around my waist, locking us together as I walked to the door, rummaging through my pockets for the keys to unlock it.
