Page 10 of My Scarred Laird
He knew it was a woman, but in his hazy mind, he couldn’t remember her face.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes again, the headache still lingering there.
He moved the books he was working on last night and a slip of paper fell out.
He picked it up and unfolded it.
It was a letter.
It said,
Laird,
Thank ye for yer kind words and for accepting me into yer clan. I ken I came ta the right place and ye are no’ the Laird the rumors say. I hope ye are feeling better today. I left a small cup of yer medicants on the table. It will help with yer headache. Thank ye again. Try ta rest today. Ye arena well. Get some sleep if ye need it. Yer body needs rest.
It wasn’t signed, and that made him mad.
It was from the new woman in his clan, but he didn’t know her name.
He wanted to find out who she was.
He got up from the desk and his leg pulled, making him grimace.
He stretched it out for a bit, and then walked to the door, “Ewan, I need ye.”
Within moments, Ewan was in the room, “Aye Laird, ye called?”
“I need ye ta find out all ye can about the newest member of our clan. Mainly her name.”
Ewan raised one of his eyebrows, “Aye Laird. I shall do as ye ask.”
Callum gave a nod. He walked over to the table and sure enough, there was a medicant cup.
He lifted it to his lips and downed it, shuddering.
It had a strong taste and he quickly poured himself a glass of ale to get the taste out of his mouth.
He needed to get washed up for the day and did so, giving himself a quick rinse in the basin of cold water that Roberta always left for him.
He put on his plaid and a shirt, and then pulled on his boots.
He picked up his sword belt and strapped it around his waist.
He needed to see about his clan and what needed to be done today.
When he walked carefully down the stairs, the people in the great hall went quiet and Callum held back the urge to roll his eyes.
It wasn’t new that he was scarred, and that he struggled some days to walk, but they acted as if he had gotten injured yesterday.
He was tired of it. “May I assist ye? Is there anything ye need?”
No one spoke up and he walked from the hall, and to the bailey outside.
He just needed to get his workout in and the people in his keep could wait.
He hadn’t been able to change their minds about him for years, so it wasn’t likely to change today either.
He walked to the stables and didn’t bother saddling his horse, just pulled him from the stable and vaulted onto his back.
