ONE YEAR LATER

“What’s your Christmas wish this year?” Alexander asked me for the fourth time that day.

“We’ve been over this,” I said, punching him in the arm. “If I tell you, it won’t come true.”

“But I want to know!” He said. He turned on his puppy dog eyes and blinked at me. I looked away and shook my head.

“Uh-uh,” I said. “Not telling.”

We reached the front of the line and walked up to the small table set up with small pieces of paper and pens. I made sure to hide my paper from view with my hand so he couldn’t read what I wrote: I wish that we stay in love forever. I quickly folded up the paper into four squares.

“Ready?” Alexander asked me. I held my folded paper in my hand and nodded. Together, we walked up to the big Christmas tree and put each of our papers on the branch. We backed away and stood there for a second, watching it.

“Do you think the wishes will come true?” Alexander asked me.

“Of course I do,” I said. “They always do.”

Alexander shook his head. “Not always.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“When I was six, I wished for us to be friends forever,” he whispered. He took a step towards me. “But now we’re so much more.”

He kissed me deeply, and my arms wrapped around his neck.

My heart soared. Thank goodness I looked at his paper all those years ago.

If there ever came a time that I stopped believing in the magic of Christmas and wishes coming true, all I would need to do is look to Alexander again.

He was the greatest Christmas gift I could ever have asked for.
